Introductory Message
This Self-Learning Module (SLM) is prepared so that you, our dear
learners, can continue your studies and learn while at home. Activities,
questions, directions, exercises, and discussions are carefully stated for you
to understand each lesson.

Each SLM is composed of different parts. Each part shall guide you
step-by-step as you discover and understand the lesson prepared for you.

Pre-tests are provided to measure your prior knowledge on lessons in

each SLM. This will tell you if you need to proceed on completing this module
or if you need to ask your facilitator or your teacher’s assistance for better
understanding of the lesson. At the end of each module, you need to answer
the post-test to self-check your learning. Answer keys are provided for each
activity and test. We trust that you will be honest in using these.

In addition to the material in the main text, Notes to the Teacher are
also provided to our facilitators and parents for strategies and reminders on
how they can best help you on your home-based learning.

Please use this module with care. Do not put unnecessary marks on
any part of this SLM. Use a separate sheet of paper in answering the exercises
and tests. And read the instructions carefully before performing each task.

If you have any questions in using this SLM or any difficulty in

answering the tasks in this module, do not hesitate to consult your teacher
or facilitator.

Thank you.

Lesson Emergence of the Social Sciences

1 and the Different Disciplines

Target

Hello there, it’s me again. How are you doing today? Welcome back to
Discipline and Ideas in the Social Sciences (DISS). In our previous lesson, you
were introduced to the emergence of the social science and the different
disciplines. Today, you will connect the disciplines with their historical and
social foundations by tracing the historical foundation and social context that
led to the development of each Social Science disciplines. (HUMSS_DIS 11-
IIId-4) (Department of Education Curriculum Instruction Strand 2020)

At the end of this module, you will be able to:

1. Outline the historical foundation and social context of each Social
Science disciplines;
2. Distinguish the difference between the social sciences, the natural
science and the humanities; and
3. Apply the concept scientific method when studying various human
phenomena.

Jumpstart

Let us begin!
The different social science disciplines may pose different points of
inquiry from one common social phenomenon that goes with our everyday life
events and activities that involved people living together in the society. While
one discipline is different on its perspective with the others, the main purpose
of each discipline of the social science is to characterize the nature of being
human (Tapel 2016).
Let us recall some of the different disciplines in the Social Sciences and try
connect it with their historical and social foundations by tracing its social
context that led to the development of each Disciplines of Social Science.

The Social Sciences are the fields of scholarship that study society.
Social science is commonly used as an umbrella term to refer to a plurality of
fields outside of the natural sciences. These include: anthropology,
archaeology, business administration, communication, criminology, economics,
education, government, linguistics, international relations, political science,
sociology and, in some contexts, geography, history, law, and psychology (Theo
and Baerveldt 2001).
Let us have deeper knowledge what is it all about the Disciplines of
Social Science are. Try to analyze and familiarize everything that you
encounter on the next part.

1. Anthropology

- The study of human societies and cultures and their development.

- The study of human biological and physiological characteristics and their
evolution.

2
LU_ Disciplines and Ideas in the Social Sciences _Module 2
2. Economics

- It is the scientific study of the ownership, use, and exchange of scarce

resources – often shortened to the science of scarcity.
3. Geography

- is the study of places and the relationships between people and their
environments.
- seeks to understand where things are found, why they are there, and how
they develop and change over time.

- The whole series of past events connected with someone or something

5. Linguistics

- The scientific study of language and its structure, including the study of
morphology, syntax, phonetics, and semantics.

analysis of political activity and behaviour.

3
LU_ Disciplines and Ideas in the Social Sciences _Module 2
7. Psychology

- The scientific study of the human mind and its functions, especially those
affecting behavior in a given context.

8. Demography

In Social Science, everyday life has gone beyond its usual definition and
usage: it has come to mean a pattern of activities of a group of people within
a society and thus, a good source of information about the structures of their
life’s worldview, and individual decisions and struggles (Villanueva 2016).
Activity 2: Identify what type of discipline is emphasize in the different
situations below. Write your answer after each statement.

Lesson Historical Context of the

2 Emergence of Each Discipline

Today, you will be able to identify what are the different Emergence of
the Social Science and the different disciplines. (HUMSS_DIS 11- IIId-4)
(Department of Education Curriculum Instruction Strand 2020)

At the end of this module, you will be able to:

1. Establish that study of Social Science includes disciplines like History,
Geography, Economics, Political Science and Sociology;
2. Appreciate that all these subject areas are interconnected and together
form the knowledge mass of Social Science;
3. Discuss the different stages through which human societies evolved;
and
4. Identify opportunities and challenges of our present-day society.

Jumpstart

Let us begin!
Among the disciplines that formed the social science. There were two
powerful tendendencies that dominate them. First, was the drive toward
unification on a single master social science, and the second is toward the
specialization of the individual social sciences.

of the emergence of each discipline. Try to analyze and familiarize everything
that you encounter on the next part.

Let us begin by travelling in time and unravelling the historical context

of the different disciplines of the social sciences.

DISCIPLINE OF SOCIAL SCIENCE:

1. Anthropology is the study of human life and culture, where people based
their thoughts on scientific and rational philosophical thoughts rather than
religious beliefs. Took place in Europe on 17- 18th Century key personalities
were Franz Boas, Bronislaw Malinowski. Under Anthropology were Physical
Anthropology, Cultural Anthropology and Archeology

Physical Anthropology or Biological anthropology is its other name,

Centers primarily on the human biological origins and the variations in
human species

7
LU_ Disciplines and Ideas in the Social Sciences _Module 2
Cultural Anthropology includes religion, ritual, myth, technology,
gender roles, kinship forms, economic and political structures; music and
folklore.
Archaeology Involves the study of earlier cultures and ways of life by
previous human societies

2. Economics, is the study of the production, distribution and consumption

Jurgen Habermas. The branches are General Linguistics, Micro Linguistics
and Macro Linguistics.
General Linguistics examines the diversity of language structures and
use in the languages of the world.

Micro Linguistics studies the structure of language systems like

Phonetics that studies of correct pronunciations of words, Phonology studies
on sounds of the language, Morphology studies on language form, Syntax
studies on how words form into phrases and Semantics studies on the
meanings of words or terms.

Macro Linguistics the study of broad influences on language.
