UNIT 2
Obesity has become a more and more common disease among teenagers. The causes of obesity
are related to different factors such as genes, biology, behavior and culture. Obesity occurs when a person
eats more calories than the body burns. If one parent is obese, there is a 50 percent chance that his or her
child will also be obese. However, when both parents are obese, their children have an 80 percent chance
of being obese. In addition, more and more teenagers are obese because of their poor eating habits or
overeating a lot of fast-food. Some are so busy with homework or some are so lazy that they can't spend
any time doing exercises. Watching TVs or playing computer games for hours and hours are also the
reason for them being overweight. Being obese, teenagers can face many health problems such as heart
disease, breathing problems, sleeping problems, and joint pain. More seriously, they often have low-
esteem and lack confidence.
UNIT 3
Being a volunteer is one of the best things you can do with your life. It’s a great way to help other
people. It’s also very satisfying to know that you are not wasting your time and are helping people who
need help. Many of us could and should be out there doing voluntary activities of some kind. So many
volunteer organizations need extra hands. It really is easy. Just pick up the phone and offer your services.
I think too many of us settle into a lazy lifestyle. We just want to come home and watch TV. Life is much
more interesting when you’re a volunteer. I’ve found it really opens your eyes to how some people live.
It’s sometimes sad to see how the government lets people down, but at least I’m doing my bit.

Review 1 BASIC (Units 1, 2, 3)

My favourite hobby is reading. I enjoy reading a book when I have time.
I started to do it when I was four years old. The first time I did it, I felt interested. So I kept
reading. The teachers always taught me to read the difficult words. I was happy when I read a story with a
happy ending. I was thrilled when I read a detective story. I enjoy reading because I like to explore the
imaginative world of my favourite author, J.K.Rowling who writes “Harry Potter”.
There are a lot of advantages of reading.Reading can make me relaxed and calm. I can also learn
new vocabulary items. Then I can further improve my English. Moreover, it can give me an unlimited
imagination, so I can write books in the future. I can learn the different cultures of other countries in the
world too. I read at least one hour every day. I read books by myself at home. I wish I could read different
kinds of books because it might be very challenging.

Review 2 ADVANCED (Units 1, 2, 3)

1. Welcome everyone to the Volunteer program in Galapagos Islands Farm Ecuador. It is a meaningful job
because the poor farmer here really need your helping hands. There are a lot for you to do when you take
part in the campaign, so every day is different. However, there are two main jobs. The firstone is to help
farmers during the harvest time. You have to do something by hands, but of course, we have machines to
help you out with heavy tasks. The second job is to do maintenance work in the school. Most of the
schools here are very old and poorly – equipped. A lot of things need to be fixed to make sure that
children are safe in their classroom. Both jobs are equally important to the people here.
2. If you join us, you need to know some information about your stay here. The Volunteer’s house has 6
bedrooms, with 3 bathroom and 2 showers with hot water outside of the house. Volunteers share
bedrooms of 4 people. Three meals a day are served in the farm by the local staff. Volunteers usually
work for five days each week in the morning, with weekends off. Afternoons are free to go to the port,
visit the beach, and any other activities you might enjoy. Evenings are quiet and usually spent chatting,
listening to music, writing in your journal or reading.

UNIT 4
I’m a great art lover. I look at beautiful paintings and sculptures and wish I could be artistic. I
can't draw or paint to save my life. I wonder why some people are so talented and can create amazing
pictures, when other people, like me, can't even draw good matchstick figures. I would like to fill my
house with art from all over the world. It’s interesting to see how different cultures have different kinds of
art. There’s nothing better than visiting art galleries when you go to another country. I prefer more
traditional art. I don't really understand a lot of modern art. I look at an exhibit of a pile of bricks in a
museum but can't see how it’s art. I always laugh when my children say, “Daddy, I can do better than
that!” I often think they can.

UNIT 5
Among all the Vietnamese dishes that came to the attention of foreign visitors, nothing else is
more popular than Pho. Pho is considered as the national dish of Vietnam. Pho is the perfect comfort food
- warm, hearty and deliciously refreshing. In Vietnam it’s a very common food for all people. It’s street
food, too. It was born at the beginning of the twentieth century in and around Hanoi, the capital of
Vietnam. Some people say that long before Pho was popularized on the streets of Hanoi, it was being
prepared in Nam Dinh, a province located about fifty-five miles from Hanoi. But it is not certain. We just
know that Pho originated from the North of Vietnam. There are 2 main types of Pho: Pho of the North and
Pho of the South. Many people agree that Pho of the North has an intense and delicate flavor. This is
completely different from Pho of the South.

UNIT 6
The Temple of Literature is about 10 minutes away from HoanKiem lake. It was constructed in
1070 during Ly Thanh Tong’s dynasty. In 1076, King Ly Nhan Tong continued the work and built the
temple of literature Quoc Tu Giam as the first university of Vietnam.
The temple is divided into five courtyards. The first courtyard stretches from the main gate to Dai
Trung gate; the second stands out with Khue Van Cac pavilion. The third courtyard is where doctor names
was listed on a tombstone above tortoise backs. There are a total of 82 tombstones, with names and
origins of 1307 doctors in 82 examination courses from 1442 to 1779. In exam time, numerous students
come here and rub the tortoise head. People believe that this act will bring them luck to pass the test. The
fourth courtyard is dedicated for Confucius and his 72 honoured students, as well as Chu Van An.The last
and also furthest courtyard is Thai Hoc house, which used to be The temple of literature - the first
university of Vietnam. The temple of Literature opens from 8:30 to 11:30 in the morning and from 13:30
to 16:30 in the afternoon, everyday except Monday and national holidays.

Review 4 ADVANCED (Units 4, 5, 6)
MC: At exam time, it’s important to sleep well. Today, we have Dr. Baker with us in the studio. And he’s
going to give us five top tips for getting a good night’s sleep. Welcome to the show, Dr. Baker.
Dr. Baker: Thank you. It’s great to be here. Let’s start with tip 1: Don't go to bed with the television on.
Some people think that they can sleep well with the TV on, but the noise and the lights mean you don't
really sleep well. So, turn it off.
Tip 2: Don't think too much before bedtime. Do your hardest homework earlier in the evening, do
the easier homework later. If your brain is too busy and full of ideas, it’ll take longer to get to sleep.
Tip 3: Don’t play video games for an hour before you go to sleep. They also make your brain too
busy and active.
Tip 4: Turn off your cell-phone when you go to bed. What is so important that you can't wait until
the morning? If possible, leave your phone in another room.
Tip 5: Play music if you like, but don’t play it too loud. Turn the sound down low.
MC: Thank you Dr. That is very useful advice for our young listener.

END - OF - TERM TEST 1 BASIC

Hi, everyone! My name is Dave. Last weekend, I had a wonderful time joining in a small
volunteer campaign with lots of my schoolmates. Its name was “Go green”. It was organized by my
school. What we did was to make our school and three other schools in the area become greener. We
planted a lot of trees in different parts of the schools. We divided into teams of six. Each group had one
teacher as a leader and was responsible for a small area. Our group planted 5 small trees and 1 bigger one
in my school and 9 small trees in other schools. We planted 15 trees in total! Not a small number, right? It
was great to help other school. The school bus took us to those schools and we spent one and a half day to
work in the three schools. I was a bit tired on the second day, but it was a lot of fun to meet some new
friends. After that day, I got 2 new interesting friends!!! Also, it was a good chance for me to learn about
teamwork.

END - OF - TERM TEST 2 ADVANCED

Playing a musical instrument is a great hobby to have. I started playing the piano when I was five
years old. I still really enjoy it now. It’s a perfect way to relax and cheers me up when I’m feeling down. I
have a lovely reddish piano. It was a gift from my grandmother for my 13th birthday. Although it is not a
brand new piano, I really like it. When I feel tired or stressed because of studying, I often take a break to
play something energetic. It helps me relax. I also like to play some pieces of beautiful music to my
family members, especially my elder sister. Because she knows a lot about music. And she loves music
and piano too. I have piano lessons every week. My teacher helps me a lot. She likes classical music. Her
favorite composer is Chopin. I think that I like classical music, too. And I can play some music by my
favorite composer Beethoven. Sometimes, when I am away from home, I cannot play my piano, then I
really miss it. I wish that pianos were as portable as guitars and trumpets so that I could take it along with
me all the time.
