2 Description
Example for a film without substrate made of adhesive compound:
Adhesive tape according to TL 52223-A

3 Requirements

3.1 General requirements

Approval of first supply and changes according to Volkswagen standard VW 01155.
Avoidance of hazardous substances according to VW 91101.
The required numerical values apply to each individual measurement.
At least 3 m or a corresponding quantity of the self-adhering elastomer profile or body panel blanks
is required for complete testing.

3.2 Delivery form

The adhesive tapes are supplied bonded to the elastomer profiles.

3.2.1 After-sales service parts

The side intended to be adhered to the body panel is covered by a PE protective film (≥ 0,05 mm thick).
The elastomer profiles provided with adhesive tape are supplied in airtight bags made of ≥ 0,1 mm
thick PE film that have been heat-sealed.

3.2.2 Shelf life

Maximum 5 years in the ISO 554-23/50 standard climate. Direct sun radiation must be avoided. It
must be possible to easily remove the PE protective film from the adhesive tape, without leaving a
residue, prior to mounting.

3.3 Notes on adhesive tape selection

Apart from the bonding system characteristic, the properties of an adhesive bond are also determined
by the material composition (e.g., plasticizer content), shape, and weight, as well as the mechanical
behavior (e.g., elasticity) of the elastomer profile.
The requirements apply to systems that are not subject to dynamic loads. For bonded profiles with
more stringent mechanical requirements, new values for the adhesive bond must be specified in the
drawing, e.g., for seals.
The physical/chemical surface condition of the various paint systems plays an important role as an
additional influencing factor. Empirically, a minimum surface energy of 40 mN/m with a minimum polar
fraction of 4 mN/m has been determined for the surface to be bonded.
These parameters must be considered when selecting an adhesive tape design; examinations must
be performed to ensure the parameters.
Page 3
TL 52223: 2008-12

3.4 Dimensions of the adhesive tape

If the adhesive tape selection is limited to one material type, attention must be paid to ensuring that
the thickness and width is suitable for meeting the requirements (adhesive tape material type and
seal base, geometry).

3.7 Determination of measured values

Unless otherwise specified, measurements are taken after 1 h acclimatization in the ISO 554-23/50
standard climate.

4 Required properties

4.1 Adhesive tape

Requirements for tensile strength and elongation at tear must be obtained from the data sheets. For
bonded assemblies subject to static and dynamic loads, a calculation must be performed to determine
Page 4
TL 52223: 2008-12

whether the material properties of the foam core meet the requirements. The minimum required val‐
ues specified in the following sections refer to known bonding systems. Foam fracture in the tape
signifies a sufficiently good adhesion of the overall system and results in acceptance of the bonding
system during the test. If the values achieved during the test are less than the minimum values, an
assessment must be made as to whether these values will withstand the occurring loads.
The test effort must be adjusted to the respective application. The corresponding agings in media
have to be performed only when actual contact with these media is possible in driving operation or
during vehicle manufacturing. Obviously, a roof edge seal bonded to the windshield comes in contact
with windshield washer fluids. For many vehicle models, transit coating removers are no longer used,
which means that the tests for resistance to these media are no longer required. The same applies
to the ball drop test, which does not have to be performed for profiles bonded to glass.
For purposes of the application, attention must be paid that surfaces are sufficiently cleaned and that
the contact pressure is optimal for the adhesive tape selected. The geometries of the joining surfaces
must allow for a suitable and sufficient compression.

5 Notes on testing

5.1 Aging at elevated temperature

Aging for 240 h at +90 °C.
The measurement is taken after at least 24 h of acclimatization in the ISO 554-23/50 standard climate.

5.2 Humid aging at elevated temperature

Aging for 240 h at +70 °C and (100 - 6)% relative humidity.
Aging period is followed by drying: +70 °C recirculated air with fresh-air supply, 8 h.
The measurement is taken after at least 24 h of acclimatization in the ISO 554-23/50 standard climate.

5.3 Low-temperature aging

Aging for 48 h at -40 °C.
The measurement is taken after at least 24 h of acclimatization in the ISO 554-23/50 standard climate.
Test only if exposure is theoretically possible. For example, test is meaningless with glazing.

5.4 Adhesive tape/elastomer profile bond

The specimens must be prepared as follows:
The elastomer material hindering the peeling action is removed beforehand.
TL 52223-B and -C The adhesive tape must be peeled off together with the
covering.
TL 52223-D to -F The cover film is removed and replaced by a reinforcing
aluminum strip. The adhesive tape must be peeled off
together with the aluminum strip.
Flexible elastomer profiles must be reinforced in a suitable manner, e.g., adhering to a sheet metal
strip. The values obtained after humid aging at elevated temperature are dependent on the tested
profile geometry. Narrow, thin tapes are weakened more significantly. The values specified here are
based on standard designs (10 mm width). Any deviating values must be entered in the drawing.

5.5 Floating roller peel test

Determination of the relative peel strength PS in a floating roller peeling fixture according to
DIN 1464; except traverse speed is 50 mm/min.
Testing is performed with a tensile test machine conforming to at least class 1 requirements according
to DIN EN ISO 7500-1 Supplement 1.
Page 7
TL 52223: 2008-12

The original structure must be used for determining the relative peel strength. If PS cannot be deter‐
mined on the original substrate using a tensile test machine as described above, a manual measuring
instrument may be used as an alternative.
The relative peel strength must be determined from the peel test diagram. It corresponds to the
average strength during a continuous peeling-off action. An area of the peel test diagram representing
(30 to 90)% of the diagram length must be used for the evaluation.
Number of specimens: 5.

5.6 Bonding behavior

Either the tensile shear test or traction adhesive strength test is used as the test method, depending
on the design of the elastomer profile. The drawing note indicates the test method (e.g.: Adhesive
bond according to TL 52223, test method: traction adhesive strength test).
Elastomer sections of 70 mm length are adhesively bonded to painted test panels (dimensions 70 x
30 mm).
Hindering elastomer material is removed beforehand.
The painted test panels must only be used once.
If required, all paint systems (solid paint, 1-component metallic clear coat, 2-component PUR clear
coat) must be included in the examinations.
The size of the bonding area where the painted panel and add-on part overlap must be at least
3 cm2.
Characteristic data of the bonding process:
– Painted panel and profile are kept at a constant temperature in +40 °C recirculated air for 15 min
– The parts to be bonded are joined with a contact pressure of 1,25 N/cm2 for 15 min
– The specimens are conditioned in +50 °C recirculated air for 30 min. Following 1 h of acclimati‐
zation at room temperature, the specimen is ready for testing.

5.7 Tensile shear strength

Determination of the tensile shear strength according to DIN EN 1465, traverse speed of 50 mm/min.
For testing of resistance to various media, the relevance of the test must be determined based on
the design (see Table 2, No. 1.5, No. 1.6, and No. 1.7).
Testing is performed with a tensile test machine conforming to at least class 1 requirements according
to DIN EN ISO 7500-1.
The specimen is secured with suitable mountings in vertical position in the clamping devices of the
tensile test machine.
Number of specimens: 5.

5.8 Creep tensile shear strength

Determination of the creep tensile shear strength according to DIN EN 15336, test duration ≥ 30 min.
Testing at elevated temperature of +70 °C requires prior specimen conditioning for 30 min.
Number of specimens: 5.
Page 8
TL 52223: 2008-12

5.9 Traction adhesive strength

The traction adhesive strength is determined with a tensile test machine conforming to at least class 1
requirements according to DIN EN ISO 7500-1.
Traverse speed: 50 mm/min.
The painted test panel is secured with a suitable mounting in horizontal position in the top clamping
device of the tensile test machine, while the full length of the profile is secured in the bottom clamping
device.
Number of specimens: 5.

5.10 Low-temperature behavior

Testing of low-temperature behavior according to PV 3905; ball drop height of 23 cm.
Production of specimens according to Section 5.7, except flush bonding of each 70 mm long painted
panel/profile section.
The test requires prior conditioning at -40 °C for 24 h.

5.11 Aging in windshield washer fluid

Testing according to PV 2037; except aging period is 1 h or 5 min.

5.12 Aging in test fuel

Aging in FAM test fluid according to DIN 51604-1 at (23 +2) °C; duration of 5 min.
The test is started 30 min after removal of the specimen from the medium.
