Changes
The following changes have been made as compared to TL 52223: 1993-02:
– The requirements in TL 52386 (types A and B) were incorporated into TL 52223.
– Standard restructured
– Referenced documents updated
1 Scope
This Technical Supply Specification defines the material requirements for adhesive tapes used to
mount elastomer profiles, such as EPDM, CR, or TPE, onto painted body surfaces.
It contains requirements for the adhesive tapes as well as the adhesive bonds produced with them.
This Technical Supply Specification is also valid for adhesive tapes that have a heat-activatable
adhesive layer facing the profile side.
Example: Water deflecting seal B3, EPDM profile, top window glass edge, Touareg
2 Description
Example for a film without substrate made of adhesive compound:
Adhesive tape according to TL 52223-A
3 Requirements
3.5 Types
– TL 52223-A Film without substrate, made of adhesive compound
– TL 52223-B Nonwoven fabric-reinforced film made of adhesive com‐
pound
– TL 52223-C Adhesive tape with PETP film as substrate
– TL 52223-D Adhesive tape with EVA foam as substrate
– TL 52223-E Adhesive tape with closed-cell polyacrylate foam core
– TL 52223-F Adhesive tape with PCR foam as substrate
4 Required properties
whether the material properties of the foam core meet the requirements. The minimum required val‐
ues specified in the following sections refer to known bonding systems. Foam fracture in the tape
signifies a sufficiently good adhesion of the overall system and results in acceptance of the bonding
system during the test. If the values achieved during the test are less than the minimum values, an
assessment must be made as to whether these values will withstand the occurring loads.
The test effort must be adjusted to the respective application. The corresponding agings in media
have to be performed only when actual contact with these media is possible in driving operation or
during vehicle manufacturing. Obviously, a roof edge seal bonded to the windshield comes in contact
with windshield washer fluids. For many vehicle models, transit coating removers are no longer used,
which means that the tests for resistance to these media are no longer required. The same applies
to the ball drop test, which does not have to be performed for profiles bonded to glass.
For purposes of the application, attention must be paid that surfaces are sufficiently cleaned and that
the contact pressure is optimal for the adhesive tape selected. The geometries of the joining surfaces
must allow for a suitable and sufficient compression.

5 Notes on testing
The original structure must be used for determining the relative peel strength. If PS cannot be deter‐
mined on the original substrate using a tensile test machine as described above, a manual measuring
instrument may be used as an alternative.
The relative peel strength must be determined from the peel test diagram. It corresponds to the
average strength during a continuous peeling-off action. An area of the peel test diagram representing
(30 to 90)% of the diagram length must be used for the evaluation.
Number of specimens: 5.
