MISSING EMPEROR PENGUIN

Have you seen this penguin?
Last seen: Shuffling onto a ship that was
carrying a cargo of fish. When the ship arrived
in the port, all the fish had been eaten and
there was no sign of the emperor penguin.
Appearance: Stands 1 metre tall and weighs
35 kilograms. The emperor penguin has short,
thick, stiff, black-and-white feathers. Black
feathers cover his back, flippers and head.
He looks as if he is wearing a black dinner
jacket and top hat! He also has short, stubby legs with strong,
wide, webbed feet. A layer of blubber under his skin makes him
chubby. He needs this fat to keep warm, as temperatures can be
as cold as –60°C (76°F) where he lives.

1 What do emperor penguins eat?

1
3 In what way does the emperor penguin look ‘as if he is wearing
a black dinner jacket and top hat’?

Getting about: Waddles along on his broad feet. Sometimes,

he likes to slither and slide on his sleek tummy to speed up.
He uses his flippers and feet to thrust forward, skimming over
snow and ice like a sledge.

Special skills: The emperor

penguin is a magnificent
swimmer. His streamlined
body allows him to glide
through the water smoothly
and quickly, and he steers
using his paddle-like flippers
and rudder-like tail. He can
leap in and out of the water.
This amazing talent is known
as porpoising. He hunts
for food in the sea and feeds on fish, squid and krill. He can
dive 565 metres (1,850 feet) under the sea. That’s deeper than
any other bird! He can stay under the water for an incredible
twenty minutes.

Likes: Huddling together in a group with other emperor

penguins to keep warm. It’s toasty and snug in the middle
of the group but chilly for penguins standing on the outside
of the bunch. Because of this, the penguins take turns
standing in the middle.

If found: Please return to the Antarctic, immediately.
