A robot can be defined as a programmed, self-controlled device with electronic, electrical, or mechanical
parts. The idea of robots or robotlike devices can be traced back to medieval times. People of that era did not
have a word for what is now called a “robot”, but they did imagine mechanisms that could perform human-like
tasks. There have been different attempts at building robots at different times in history. Miniature automata,
or self-operating machines, became popular toys for the very rich in the 18th and 19th centuries. They were
made to look and move like humans or small animals. The first automaton was Jacques de Vaucanson’s The
Flute Player. It was constructed in 1737, and it looked like a shepherd. It was able to play twelve different
songs on a tiny flute while it was keeping time on a drum.

During the 20th century, large holes were found in the ozone layer over the Arctic and Antarctic regions.
However, this decline in ozone levels may have stopped now. Scientists are still cautious, however, and will
need 10 more years before they can confirm this. In the mid-1970s, scientists discovered that the chemicals
which had long been used in refrigeration and aerosols were destroying the ozone layer. They started to be
replaced with different chemicals after an international agreement in 1987. The ozone layer is important
because, without its protection, people are more likely to get skin cancer or certain other diseases.
75. We can conclude from the passage that the holes in the ozone layer
A. were caused by the introduction of new chemicals in the 1970s.
B. have worried countries around the world.

77. It can be understood from the passage that the two holes in the ozone layer
A. were caused by humans. B. no longer exist.

The future of the solar system cannot be known for certain, because accidents can happen at any time. For
example, a star might pass right through and destroy the system. If no accident happens, the future depends on
the behaviour of the sun. The sun is slowly getting brighter as it consumes its supply of hydrogen and turns it
into helium. If current calculations are correct, the sun will grow much brighter and larger in about 5 billion
years’ time. After this, Earth, as well as the other planets, will get too hot for life to endure.
