CHAPTER 2

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

This chapter discusses all the relevant literature and studies gathered by researchers to

provide concrete evidences to justify the topics under study. Chapter 2 is divided into 5

parts: (1) Utilizing AI in Teaching (2) Voice Recognition (3) AI in Learning (4)

Personalized Education (5) Application of AI in Education

2.1 Utilizing AI in Teaching and Assessments

The capabilities of AI demonstrates a more convenient solution to many

challenging tasks especially in education. AI applications got introduced to various

education institutes because AI can answer questions, provide information, and interact

with people, decreasing the number of students who struggle with coping with school-

related problems. According to the Horizon Report 2019 Higher Education Edition,

chances of AIEd growing more significantly than experts’ estimate of 43% in the period

of 2018-2022 (Educause, 2019.) AIEd has been the subject of research for about 30

years, but it has been rapidly expanding in recent years.

The most advanced AI powered chat bot as well as the cheapest and easiest to

access today is Chat GPT ( Rudolph, 2023 ), a variant of Open AI’s Generative Pre-

trained Transformer that is capable of interacting in a natural, human-like manner

ACCOUNTING , BUSINESS, AND MANAGEMENT

LAS PIÑAS CITY NATIONAL SENIOR HIGH
SCHOOL-DOÑA JOSEFA CAMPUS ii

( Rudolph, 2023). The Atlantic featured Chat GPT as “the generative-AI eruption”,

capable of altering many aspects of people’s lives, including how one works, thinks, and

what human creativity really is capable of ( Thompson, 2022 ).

AI technology is being used as a development tool to build intelligent learning

environments that can focus on developing algorithms, including classification (Cai,

2021). Assessing students’ performances demands a collection of information, analytics,

interpretation, and actions with respect to learning goals ( Redcay & Schilbach, 2019).

Computer-based applications, compared to the traditional or old methods of assessment,

can not only conduct assessments within a short span of time, but it can also perform

rapidly with large numbers of collected student data for unbiased evaluation (Rabin 2019)

thus providing more time for other tasks, beneficial to both teacher and learner.

Although computer-based applications help minimize educators’ workload,

assessing plenty of students is one of the primary tasks of a teacher ( Amri & Ali 2016),

Even if the ability of AI to enormously support teaching and learning is highly valued by

most, some ethical risks still come in with AIEd ( Richter, 2019) such as budget cuts.

Administrators may consider replacing human labor with AI. However, AI, just like any

other invention, can have errors in its system. It is true that AI is convenient and accurate

most of the time. However, the probability of it replacing humans in labor is very

unlikely. Many administrations still handle confidential information from work and

should be analyzed by a real person.

ACCOUNTING , BUSINESS, AND MANAGEMENT

LAS PIÑAS CITY NATIONAL SENIOR HIGH
SCHOOL-DOÑA JOSEFA CAMPUS ii

2.2 Voice Assistants

A common feature in modern day phones is Voice Recognition which originated

from Apple’s Siri which later on got introduced to its new rival Google’s Alexa (Pundir,

2019). TTS (Text to Speech) opens the opportunity to conveniently perform multiple

tasks as well as help those who struggle using their phones due to certain disabilities.

Many under the educational industry are facing the benefits and challenges brought by

the continuously and rapidly developing artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, which

would be most likely to change the culture, methods, and foundations of educational

institutes (Popenici & Kerr, 2017). Virtual Assistants work mainly on voice as

communication, signaling data and information into its system, converting them to text

and analyzing commands which later on helps the VA perform the required task. In

general, speech processing consists the following: A Speech-To-Text system converts

speech signals to text, A Parser that extracts the semantic context, A Dialog Manager that

determines system response through machine learning algorithms, an Answer Generator

that provides the system response in text and A Speech Synthesizer that converts text to

the speech signal (Patil, Shewale, Bhustan, Fernandes, Khartadkar, 2021).

The use of AIVA or Artificial Intelligent Virtual Assistant allows its users to

perform the tasks by giving Voice Commands. AIVAs are even capable of handling small

talk with the user. With the development of the application, users were able to gain

enough knowledge on Natural Language Understanding Platforms and Machine Learning

Models which are the foundations for developing future Artificial Intelligence Models.

ACCOUNTING , BUSINESS, AND MANAGEMENT

LAS PIÑAS CITY NATIONAL SENIOR HIGH
SCHOOL-DOÑA JOSEFA CAMPUS ii

2.3 AI in Learning

Deep learning is another widely used term that is also one of the many approaches

to machine learning (Pedro, 2019) . In the context of Artificial Intelligence in Education

(AIEd), technology massively advances and affects traditional methods of teaching and

learning. Barrio (2018) explained the most obvious difference between human and

artificial intelligence is that the computer (regardless of its capacity or energy) is limited

to what it calls “signals” (logical programming language) with a higher memory capacity

than human intelligence; however, unlike the latter, it is unable to interpret meanings.

Therefore, the computer’s operational or computational intelligence is limited to

processing information, but it does not have the ability to understand what they are

processing.

AI applications are beneficial for both students and teachers as it is used to create

a learning environment and provide collaborative learning (Chaudhary, 2017) Using

computer intelligence and new technologies can help teachers and students gain more

educational experience. It will provide information to teachers and management about the

practices and scope of artificial intelligence in education required to gain excellence.

AIEd supports learning occurring in both traditional classes and workplaces by

combining AI and various learning sciences, for example, education, psychology,

linguistics, and neuroscience, aiming at stimulating and advancing the development of

AI-driven educational applications featuring flexibility, personalization, and effectiveness

(Luckin, Holmes, Griffiths, & Forcier, 2016).

ACCOUNTING , BUSINESS, AND MANAGEMENT

LAS PIÑAS CITY NATIONAL SENIOR HIGH
SCHOOL-DOÑA JOSEFA CAMPUS ii

AI is expected to think and respond the same way humans do, thus increasing the abilities

in fields such as the following:

- Natural Language Processing – Robotics

- Speech Understanding

- Neural Network

- Expert stems

The primary aim of artificial intelligence is to enable machines to process information as

closely as the human way of solving problems, Processing Parallel where several orders

are executed at time runs out and this is the closest human way to solving problems.

2.4 Personalized Learning

Each student has a different learning style, background, needs, and experiences,

hence personalized learning involves customizing and adapting educational methods and

strategies to better meet each individual learner’s needs.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is used in personalized learning to adjust education to the level

and rate of learning of each learner (Zarei et al., 2022). By analyzing data and finding

patterns in students’ learning behaviors, preferences, and accomplishments, Al plays a

crucial part in personalized learning (Samad, 2022). Al can use this information to create

learning experiences that are customized to each student’s needs (Samudrala, et al.,

2022).

The usage of AI is expanding and is poised to transform both administrators‘ and

students’ learning experiences. When all of your tedious, time-consuming tasks are

ACCOUNTING , BUSINESS, AND MANAGEMENT

LAS PIÑAS CITY NATIONAL SENIOR HIGH
SCHOOL-DOÑA JOSEFA CAMPUS ii

automated, it not only offers more individualized learning capabilities but also makes

task more enjoyable. AI-based learning platforms can offer individualized learning

experiences in a number of ways, including by tracking students’ prior performance and

determining the subject areas in which they are struggling. Additionally, AI can adjust to

the rate at which the student is learning, pacing the lesson accordingly.

Moreover, AI can offer personalized feedback on students’ progress as well as

recommendations for improvement. Resulting in a more personalized and successful

learning experience. Most students are more interested and motivated to study when

personalized learning is used, and this can result in greater academic performance and

higher retention rates. With personalized learning, students receive the assistance and

direction they need to attain their full potential.

2.5 Application of AI in Education

Applications of artificial intelligence (AI) in education are expanding quickly

around the world and have an impact on the field of education. These applications are

being used to enhance university services, assist teachers in providing high-quality

instruction, and boost student learning. The usage of AI apps by students, teachers, and

administrators, as well as the development of numerous tools, algorithms, and

applications that have the potential to revolutionize the education industry, have all had a

significant impact on the sector of education. The application of AI in education is shown

in the following:

• AI computer- assisted content analysis

ACCOUNTING , BUSINESS, AND MANAGEMENT

LAS PIÑAS CITY NATIONAL SENIOR HIGH
SCHOOL-DOÑA JOSEFA CAMPUS ii

The phenomenal advancements in AI have made it possible to automate textual

content analysis. A few years ago, manual content analysis was the norm; today, AI-

assisted content analysis is popular. Natural language processing opens up a wide range

of possibilities in fields that deal with massive amounts of textual data.

• Assistive Technology (Chatbots)

The usage of chatbots in education is growing as they offer students

individualized help, automate administrative work, and create new interaction

opportunities (Yeruva, Choudhari, et al., 2022). One of the main advantages of

employing chatbots in education is their capacity to offer pupils individualized support.

Chatbots can serve as virtual teachers for students, giving immediate feedback,

responding to inquiries, and assisting them as they study (Sridhar et al., 2022).

Additionally, chatbots can track progress, suggest areas for improvement, and make

personalized recommendations for learning resources, resulting in a more tailored

learning experience.

• Image Analytics (Facial Recognition)

An application of artificial intelligence (AI) called image analytics uses

algorithms to extract, examine, and assess data from digital photos. The explosion of

digital picture output and the continuous improvement of image quality and variety have

tremendously aided in its expansion. Facial recognition is the most well-known use of

artificial intelligence for picture analytics (Dzhangarov et al., 2020). Image analytics has

been applied to the field of education to extract facial traits and identify emotion. With

ACCOUNTING , BUSINESS, AND MANAGEMENT

LAS PIÑAS CITY NATIONAL SENIOR HIGH
SCHOOL-DOÑA JOSEFA CAMPUS ii

just one image from a capturing device, facial recognition has been used to manage

student attendance using AI image analytics (Menezes et al., 2020).

2.6 Synthesis

Artificial intelligence is important and beneficial for both learners and educators

because it is used to provide an educational environment and introduce collaborative

learning (Chaudhary 2017.) The use of AI and modern technologies can help teachers

and students gather significant educational experience, as well as improve teachers’

management practices and scope of artificial intelligence in education necessary to gain

excellence (Fernández, Fernández, and Aburto, 2019). The importance of artificial

intelligence does not stop at this point but rather contributes to improving education for

all different levels, while improving the qualitative process of education by providing

students with feedback for their learning according to their requirements, and managing

the integration of different forms of human interaction and information and

communication technology.

CHAPTER 3

METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the discussion of research methods and procedures that will

be adhered to by the researchers in order to gather relevant information for the data

collection and analysis. This will include a comprehensive description of the following:

research design, participants and selection criteria, research locale, research instruments

and techniques, data gathering procedures, and data analysis and procedures.

3.1 Research Design

The research design is the framework of methods and techniques that researchers

select and apply to their research study. According to Baxter&Jack (2008) qualitative

case study is a research method that aids in the analysis of a phenomenon within a

specific context using a variety of data sources and a variety of lenses in order to expose

multiple aspects of the phenomenon. Qualitative case study methodology provides tools

for researchers to study complex phenomena within their context. This is a type of

qualitative research design that can help researchers focus on a specific person, event,

situation, program, problem, etc. (Leedy and Ormrod, 2005).

In this study, the researchers decided that a case study will be used to gather data as

it is the most comprehensive choice of design for analyzing data in depth, especially in

ACCOUNTING , BUSINESS, AND MANAGEMENT

LAS PIÑAS CITY NATIONAL SENIOR HIGH
SCHOOL-DOÑA JOSEFA CAMPUS ii

the evaluation of the certain phenomena of utilizing AI especially in the field of

education which is necessary for the best research outcome.

The purpose of this research is to gain an understanding of the advances in

education by artificial intelligence, measuring the competencies of students in academic

performances, and teachers’ evaluation for the students.

3.2 Participants and Selection Criteria

The sampling technique that will be used for this study is a probability sampling

technique where the targeted population is the grade 11 ABM students of Las Piñas City

National Senior High School – Doña Josefa Campus, with the objective to observe their

academic performances. The study will solely focus on the experiences of the participants

and their feedback to various academic tasks while using AI apps. The probability

sampling technique that will be used is simple random sampling. Simple random

sampling is a probability sampling method that provides each member of the population

an equal chance of being selected as a participant of the study. The sample population

will only include grade 11 ABM students of LPCNSHS-DJC. Simple random sampling is

the most ideal sampling technique due to its ability to secure the information and avoid

any biases between researcher and respondents, keeping objectives consistent.

3.3 Research Locale

ACCOUNTING , BUSINESS, AND MANAGEMENT

LAS PIÑAS CITY NATIONAL SENIOR HIGH
SCHOOL-DOÑA JOSEFA CAMPUS ii

This study will take place at Las Piñas City, particularly Las Piñas City National

Senior High School Doña Josefa Campus. The researchers selected the place of

implementation to gather further knowledge and information regarding on how utilizing

AI influence the academic capabilities of the students of this school. The respondents of

this study will be the Grade 11 Students of LPCNSHS-DJC under the ABM Strand. The

researchers will choose 3 students in every section and will conduct an in-person

interview within LPCNSHS-DJC to assure their safety and protection in which

respondents will be invited during their free time. This study will be conducted during the

second semester of the academic year 2022-2023.

3.4 Research Instruments and Techniques

A focus group is a research method that brings together a small group of people to

answer questions in a moderated setting (George, 2021). The research instrument that

will be used to collect data for this research is an interview. This will involve asking

open-ended questions using an unstructured interview for gathering new ideas and

viewpoints, giving the data more diversity to learn whether or not AI is capable of

helping grade 11 ABM students complete their academic tasks. This will allow

researchers to focus on the respondents’ response about their experiences on AI in their

academic performance and take the opportunity to test out their preliminary

understanding of it.

3.5 Data Gathering and Procedure

ACCOUNTING , BUSINESS, AND MANAGEMENT

LAS PIÑAS CITY NATIONAL SENIOR HIGH
SCHOOL-DOÑA JOSEFA CAMPUS ii

The researchers first prepared the questions that would be asked of the participants

to get the data they required. The Grade 11 ABM students who use AI in their academic

tasks will be the researchers’ target participants in their study, which will be carried out at

Las Piñas East National High School’s Dona Josefa Campus. The researchers will present

the consent form, which has been signed by their advisor, before the interview begins.

The importance of the respondents' responses as the primary topic of the study will be

explained to the respondents by the researcher. Each participant will be asked fifteen

questions over the course of 30 to 60 minutes to learn about the many ways AI has been

used in their academic tasks. Interview questions are validated by panelists and English

teachers. The researchers will examine and interpret the data once it has all been gathered

and analyzed.

3.6 Data Analysis and Procedures

The data will be collected through semi-structured interview with Grade 11 ABM

students from LPCNSHS Doña Josefa Campus. With the participants’ consent, the

interviews will be written and audio recorded, and will be conducted non-verbatim to

ensure that the participants’ comments are accurately preserved. Thematic coding will be

used to analyze the data. According to (Braun and Clarke’s,2006) thematic analysis

method is an interactive process consisting of six steps: (1) becoming familiar with the

data, (2) generating codes, (3) generating themes, (4) reviewing themes, (5) defining and

naming themes, and (6) locating exemplars.
