Source: Biography.com

O. Henry’ real name is William Sydney

Porter (born on September 11, 1862 in
North Carolina), an American writer, who
is best noted for his short stories set in
New York and such stories have surprise
endings. He worked as a bank teller, but
later accused of having taken money from
the bank and was put in prison for five
years where he started writing short
stories. His stories were based on his first
– hand experiences that he encountered in
Texas and New York. He died in New
York on June 5, 1910, age 47.

E. Reading Activity
Now, I will give you copies of the short
story entitled “The Gift of the Magi” and
you will read it silently for five minutes.
(Students read the story)
The Gift of the Magi
O. Henry
(William Sydney Porter)

The story opens with $1.87. That's all.

Della Dillingham Young must buy a
present for her beloved husband, Jim. And
the next day is Christmas. Faced with such
a situation, Della promptly bursts into
tears on the couch, which gives the
narrator the opportunity to tell us a bit
more about the situation of Jim and Della.
The short of it is they live in a shabby flat
and they're poor. But they love each other.
Once Della's recovered herself, she
goes to a mirror to let down her hair and
examine it. Della's beautiful, brown, knee-
length hair is one of the two great treasures
of the poor couple. The other is Jim's gold
watch. Her hair examined, Della puts it
back up, sheds a tear, and bundles up to
head out into the cold. She leaves the flat
and walks to Madame Sofronie's hair
goods shop, where she sells her hair for
twenty bucks. Now she has $21.87 cents.
With her new funds, Della is able to
find Jim the perfect present: an elegant
platinum watch chain for his watch. It's
$21, and she buys it. Excited by her gift,
Della returns home and tries to make her
now-short hair presentable (with a curling
iron). She's not convinced Jim will
approve, but she did what she had to do to
get him a good present. When she finishes
with her hair, she gets to work preparing
coffee and dinner.

Jim arrives at 7pm to find Della

waiting by the door and stares fixedly at
her, not able to understand that Della's
hair is gone. Della can't understand quite
what his reaction means.
After a little while, Jim snaps out of it
and gives Della her present, explaining
that his reaction will make sense when she
opens it. Della opens it and cries out in joy,
only to burst into tears immediately
afterward. Jim has given her the set of
fancy combs she's wanted for ages, only
now she has no hair for them. Jim nurses
Della out of her sobs. Once she's
recovered, she gives Jim his present,
holding out the watch chain. Jim smiles,
falling back on the couch. He sold his
watch to buy Della's combs, he explains.
He recommends they put away their
presents and have dinner. As they do so,
the narrator brings the story to a close by
pronouncing that Della and Jim are the
wisest of everyone who gives gifts. They
are the magi.
Yes, Sir.
Do you understand the story, class?

That’s good. Now, for us to better (Students watch the video presentation)
understand the text, let us watch a video
of “The Gift of the Magi.”

Possible answers:
What are some significant events that
• The woman in the story who was Della
happen in the story?
desired to give a present to her husband,
but she had no money.
• Della sold her hair to buy James/Jim a
present.
• The couple gave valuable gifts to each
other by selling their most important
possessions.

Now, let us answer the guide questions we

have earlier. Answers:
1. The characters in the story were the
couple Jim and Della.
2. The amount of money Della’s had before
she sold her hair is $1.87.
3. The Christmas present that Jim gave to
Della was a set of fancy combs.
4. Della sold her hair for $20.
5. Della bought a chain for Jim for $21.

Excellent answers!

"The Gift of the Magi" is a classic short

story by O. Henry, known for its poignant
message about selflessness and sacrifice.
The plot revolves around a young couple,
Jim, and Della, who were financially
struggling but deeply in love. In their
desire to give each other meaningful
Christmas presents, they sacrificed their
most valuable possessions. The money
that Della had was only $1.87 and when
you convert it to our money, the
equivalent of that is Php104.87, which is
not enough to buy Jim a present for
Christmas. While facing the mirror, Della
was looking at her beautiful and long hair
and went to Madame Sofronie to sell her
hair. Della came inside and Madame
Sofronie told her that her hair would cost
$20 which is equivalent to Php1,121.53.
Since, Della’s money was $1.87or
Php104.87 and Madame Sofronie bought
her hair for $20 or Php1,121.54, how
much money Della had to buy a chain for
Jim?
$21.87 or Php1,226.41, Sir.
Good answer!

Now that her hair was sold, Della bought

a chain for Jim’s watch for $21 in our
money, it is Php1177.61. How much
money do you think was left to Della?
Sir, 87 cents or Php48.80.

Very good.

Meanwhile Jim was also facing the same

situation just like Della, His money was
also not enough to buy Della a present so
he decided to sell his watch so he could
buy Della a present. After selling the
watch, Jim bought Della a set of fancy
combs. The gift of Jim and Della were
now useless, but they decided to put away
their gifts and then eat together. Being
wise, their gifts were no doubt wise ones
that’s why they are called “wise men”
they are the “Magi”.

Class, if you are in the situation of Jim or

Della, will you do the same?

Okay, very good! (Students answers may vary)

If you were going to give a chance to
change the plot or the ending of the story,
what would it be?
(Students answers may vary)
Very good idea!
Now, pretend that you were the author
and you are going to continue the story.
After the ending of the story what will
happen next?
(Students answers may vary)
Excellent answers!
