LESSON PLAN FOR GRADE 10

OBJECTIVES
A. Learning Apply the principles of conservation of mass to chemical reactions.
Competencies (S10MTIVe-g-23)
(Write the LC
code)
B. Performance The learners should be able to use any form of media, and present
Standards chemical reactions involved in biological and industrial processes
affecting life and the environment.

C. Learning 1. Define chemical change and chemical reaction

Objectives 2. Describe how a chemical reaction takes place
3. Give examples of chemical reactions in everyday life

II. CONTENT Lesson 2: Occurrence of Chemical Reaction

Question: What is your basis for classifying the images as Physical

or Chemical Change?

Which of the following pictures undergo Chemical Change?

C. Presenting examples/ ACTIVITY 1
instances of the new Burn Me Up
lesson
Materials: Matches and Water (water will
be used just in case of a fire)

Procedure:
1. Light the match sticks and observe what will happen.

Guide Questions:

1. How would you compare the physical and chemical

properties of the matchstick before and after lighting?
2. Does a chemical reaction take place in this activity? Prove
your answer.
3. Based on the activity, is it possible that the burned matchstick
can be turned back to its original phase?
4. Why? What kind of changes occurred in the matchstick?

D. Discussing new ACTIVITY 2

concepts and Dancing Rice Experiment
practicing new skills
#1 Materials: White Vinegar, Baking Soda, Instant Rice (half-
cooked), clear jar, water, food coloring (optional)

Procedure:
1. Fill the clear jar ¾ way full of water. If desired, mix in food
coloring.
2. Pour 1 cup of White Vinegar into the jar.
3. Mix 1 spoonful of half-cooked rice into the mixture.
4. Add 1 tablespoon of Baking Soda and stir.
5. Observe what will happen.

Guide Questions:
1. What did you observe after mixing the water, baking soda,
vinegar, and instant rice?
2. Describe the dancing reaction of rice.
3. Based on the activity, what made the rice dance?
4. After some time, what made the rice stop dancing?
5. How did you know that chemical reaction takes place? Cite
evidence of chemical reaction based on the dancing rice
experiment.

E. Discussing new
concepts and Activity 3
practicing skills #2 Bubbled Eggs

Materials: 1 raw egg, 1 cup vinegar, clear jar or glass

Procedure:
1. Pour 1 cup of vinegar into a jar.
2. Soak the egg into the vinegar.
3. Observe what will happen on the surface of the egg.
4. Record your observations.

Guide Questions:
1. What did you observe in the egg after you soaked it in the
vinegar?
2. When did you find out that the reaction took place?
3. What do you think is produced in the reaction?
4. What do you think will happen to the egg if it is continuously
soaked in the vinegar?
5. Is there a chemical change that occurred in the egg? How
about chemical reactions?
6. Describe the chemical reactions in the egg.

F. Developing mastery To answer the questions in your activity, watch the following video
(Leads to Formative clips to understand our lesson.
Assessment 3)

Activity 1:

Activity 2

Activity 3:

G. Finding practical The teacher will ask the learners to give examples of everyday
applications of chemical reactions.
concepts.
H. Making Questions to be asked:
generalizations and 1. Differentiate chemical change and chemical reaction.
abstractions about 2. What is chemical change? How do chemical reactions take
the lesson place?

Chemical change – is a process in which one or more substances

with different chemical properties. Examples:
Burning, rusting, fermentation, and digestion.

Chemical reaction – is a process in which one or more substances,

called reactants, undergo a transformation to form one or more new
substances.
I. Evaluating learning

b. change in composition d. change in size

2. Which of the following is a sign that a chemical reaction has

occurred?
a. change in shape
b. dissolving
c. formation of gas
d. melting

3. It is defined as the formation of new substances produced

during chemical reaction called _________?
a. Chemical change
b. Chemical equation
c. Physical change
d. Physical property

4. A student mixed two solutions, planning to produce carbon

dioxide. Which of the following is the BEST evidence that
chemical reaction is producing carbon dioxide?
a. Color change
b. Formation of bubbles
c. Formation of solid
d. Temperature change

5. Which of the following demonstrates that a new substance

can be formed from a chemical reaction?
