Cleaning and Disinfection Procedure

StatStrip and StatSensor

In the fall of 2010 the FDA, CDC, and CMS jointly published updated requirements for
disinfection of all Point-Of-Care devices used at the patient bedside. In response to this
new directive, Nova Biomedical developed and validated a cleaning and disinfection
procedure for all StatStrip and StatSensor meters.

An independent viral testing agency has validated this procedure and found it to be safe
and effective against Human Hepatitis B Virus on the external surfaces of the StatStrip
and StatSensor meters.

Nova Biomedical has also performed product testing on the StatStrip and StatSensor
meters demonstrating the procedure is not harmful to the meters when they are cleaned
and disinfected 10,950 times.

Validated Cleaning and Disinfection Procedure

All meter external surfaces should be cleaned and disinfected with a fresh Clorox
HealthcareTM Bleach Germicidal Wipe, EPA Reg. No. 67619-12. The following is
Nova’s validated procedure:

Clean the Meter

1. Remove a fresh germicidal wipe from the canister and wipe the external surface of
the meter thoroughly. Discard the soiled wipe into an appropriate biohazard
container.

Disinfect the Meter

1. Using a new, fresh germicidal wipe, thoroughly wipe the surface of the meter (top,
bottom, left, and right sides) a minimum of 3 times horizontally and 3 times vertically
avoiding the meter’s bar code scanner and electrical connector.

is strictly prohibited. If you have received this communication in error, please notify us immediately at (800) 545-6682.
2. Gently wipe the surface area of the test strip port making sure that no fluid enters the
port.
3. Ensure the meter surface stays wet for 1 minute and then is allowed to air dry for an
additional 1 minute. Note: To wet the meter surface again, use a new, fresh
germicidal wipe. Never re-use a previously soiled wipe.

4. Dispose of any used wipes and gloves in an appropriate biohazard container.

5. Wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water.

Use of Alternate Disinfecting Wipes

Clorox Healthcare Bleach Germicidal Wipes are the only product validated for use with
the StatStrip and StatSensor systems.

Nova selected Clorox Healthcare Bleach Germicidal Wipes because they have the
fastest kill time of any antimicrobial product listed on the Environmental Protection
Agency’s “List D: EPA’s Registered Antimicrobial Products Effective Against Human
HIV-1 and Hepatitis B Virus”.

Hospital’s that utilize an alternate germicidal product for cleaning and disinfection
should select a product on the EPA’s List D. Nova is unable to make validation claims
pertaining to the performance of other products against the Hepatitis B Virus on the
StatStrip or StatSensor meters. However, most of the effective ingredients included in
these products, including quaternary compounds, will not have a detrimental effect on
the meter’s surface.
