3 James attends St Bernard Public School and he has only two ways of getting to
school.
His mum can drive him to school, which usually only takes 10 minutes, but
around once a month the car breaks down randomly and they have to wait for it
to restart again. The other way is if James walks to school himself, which takes
forty minutes every time.
School starts at 8:50 a.m. every day.
James: “I have my Selective Test in 20 minutes and cannot be late for it, so the best
option is if I just walk to school.”
Tracey: “James left for school at 8:00 a.m. but arrived late, so he mustn’t have
walked to school today.”

get out of the well?

Solutions
1 B
The utensil can click so it must be either a pen or pacer. It can’t be erased so it can’t be a
pencil or pacer. The only utensil that fits both criteria is the pen.
2 C
Since there are 16 tails and ants are the only animals without tails there, 2 of the 18 heads
must be from ants. That means 12 of the legs are from ants, leaving 32 legs between snakes
and lizards. Since snakes have no legs, all 32 legs must be from the lizards, meaning 8 lizards
and hence 8 snakes.
3 B
James is incorrect because if he walks to school, he’ll definitely be late for the test. If he gets
driven to school, he’ll have a chance of getting to the test on time. Tracey is correct because
if he walked he would’ve arrived at school at 8:40 a.m., so since he is late he must’ve been
driven and the car broke down.
4 B
Don’t be tricked by this question, take the time to write out the height of the frog across
each day.
Day 1: 8 4
Day 2: 12 8
Day 3: 16 12
Day 4: 20 16
Day 5: 24
On day 5 the frog will climb higher than 22m and hence get out of the well.

5 D
The missing piece has a triangle pointing towards the top left corner and one black dot.
Option C and D both fit this criteria, but the triangle in option C is too small, so it must be
option D.
