2. OVERALL OBSERVATIONS/ ASSESMENTS

a) STRENGTHS
The hosting of this year’s fair was excellent. Some of the strengths were:
 All the regions arrived in good time. The teams also managed time between the venue and boys village
 All the National Organizing officials performed the assigned duties very well; congratulations.
 The program was very clear with no overlapping major activities. The training of judges was done
alongside mounting of display boards first before proceeding for the opening ceremony which was
attended by all. This gave an opportunity to all the officials to concentrate.
 Improved judging process where all sessions were judged independently. All the judging of part A was
done individually by all the judges. For part B&C all the projects were presented to the three judges
at once but the assessment was individual.
 There were adequate, well labeled and manned rooms for secretariat, judges, ministry of
Education officials and National officials. Meals were served on time and with a lot of order.
 The students’ meals in Otieno Oyioo Boys and Kisumu Girls were adequate and good.
 The security was good
 Tallying of results -The tallying of results was done using spreadsheets. The results were accurate
for the ranking of projects and regions. However, ranking of schools was not very accurate because
of different names of the same school during registration of project

b) WEAKNESSES

The following were identified as areas of weakness and thus requires urgent attention
i. Mobile phones- There was use of mobile phones by judges hence affected their concentration
ii. Use of harsh language – Some judges were judgmental and even told students the innovation was
beyond syllabus
iii. Uniformity of judging - There was no uniformity in the materials and mechanics of presentation
by some judges.

c) PLANNING FOR 2024

The National Organizing Committee deliberated and ratified the following issues:
1) Training of judges
The committee resolved that:
 Judges be trained online before the physical one shortly before the activity. This will
give a humble time to the judges to interrogate the judging tools and basic procedures
 The judges should sign a contract before the start of the exercise
This should be cascaded to lower levels
2) Presentation time
Members agreed to adjust the presentation time as follows:
 Presentation 10 minutes
 Questions 5 minutes
This will give a total of 15 minutes to every project
The adjustment will apply to all the levels
3) The number of projects proceeding to the National from the regions in 2024
The National Organizing Committee resolved to have positions 1-4 proceeding to the
Nationals from every region in 2024.
This implies:
 8 students per category times 13 categories = 104 students from every region
