CERTIFICATE

I, Aina Oluwaseyi Odunayo, hereby certify that this practical report is an authentic and original

work, submitted as part of the requirements for the award of the Higher National Diploma in

Surveying and Geoinformatics at the Federal Polytechnic, Ado-Ekiti.

1.0. INTRODUCTION:

The primary objective of a topographic survey is to gather and compile accurate data

regarding the natural and man-made features of a given area, including its elevations. This survey

provides a comprehensive representation of the relative positions and elevations of both natural

and artificial features on a property, enabling a thorough understanding of the land's morphology,

configuration, and geographical location.

The significance of topographic surveys lies in their ability to capture the intricacies of the

earth's surface, encompassing its shape, form, level, and geographical position. By providing a

comprehensive understanding of the terrain's relief, contour, and spatial relationships, these

surveys enable informed decision-making and strategic planning across various disciplines,

including engineering, architecture, urban planning, and environmental studies.

The scope of this project entails conducting a thorough topographic survey along the

stretch from Conference Hall to Engineering on the Federal Polytechnic Ado-Ekiti Campus. A

team of skilled surveyors will be responsible for executing this task, aiming to create a

comprehensive two-dimensional map that precisely depicts the complex three-dimensional

features of the terrain.

3
1.2. AIM:

This practical aims to perform a topographic survey of the area extending from the

Conference Hall to the Engineering building.

1.3. OBJECTIVES:

 To determine the site area through perimeter traversing using Differential GPS.

 To conduct perimeter leveling utilizing Differential GPS.

 To undertake a detailed survey to delineate both natural and artificial site features.

 To establish spot heights for contour generation.

 To produce a topographic map.

1.4. SITE LOCATION:

The project area encompasses the region extending from the School Conference Hall to the

Engineering department and its surroundings within the Federal Polytechnic Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti

State, Nigeria.

1.5. PROJECT SCOPE:

1. Reconnaissance: Comprising both field reconnaissance and office planning.

2. Station Selection: Identification and establishment of survey stations.
3. Traversing: Horizontal positioning data acquisition using Differential Global Positioning
System (DGPS).
4. Leveling: Perimeter leveling using DGPS.
5. Detailing and Spot Heights: Collection of detailed information and elevation data.
6. Contour Generation: Creation of contour maps using Surfer 10 software.
7. Plan Production: Generation of both digital and hardcopy plans.

4
8. Report Preparation: Documentation of the project and its findings.
1.6. PERSONNELS:

2.0. RECCONNAISSANCE

2.0.1. PROJECT PLANNING AND PREPARATION:

Sufficient time was allocated to identify mutually visible points and assess potential

obstructions along the survey routes. A reconnaissance diagram detailing the project site was

subsequently created. Pillar points were marked at each turning point.

2.1. EQUIPMENTS AND MATERIALS USED:

The following equipment and materials were utilized for the practical:

 Differential GPS Receiver CHCNAV: For real-time data acquisition.

 Field Book: For recording field observations.

 Cutlass: For clearing vegetation along the traverse line.

 Boots: For traversing through marshy areas.

 Calculator: For on-site computations

 Target: For field positioning.

2.2. MONUMENTATION:

Monumentation involves establishing fixed points at predetermined locations. At each

station point, a 16cm iron rod was driven into the ground, leaving a 2cm section exposed.

3.0. METHODOLOGY

This outlines the steps, techniques, and processes involved in achieving our particular goals.

3.1. FIELD DATA COLLECTION

Subsequent to reconnaissance and control point establishment, field data acquisition

commenced. This phase involved:

 Traversing: Collection of real-time kinematic data to define horizontal control points.

 Detailing: Recording and mapping of topographic features.

 Leveling: Acquisition of elevation data, including spot heights.

3.1.1. FIELD PROCEDURES FOR PERIMETER TRAVERSING:

 Reference System and Equipment Setup:

The survey utilized the Ado-Ekiti NIS CORS as the reference system. The rover receiver was

mounted on a tracking rod and connected to a data logger via Bluetooth. The rover was

connected with the CORS via internet connection.

Rigorous equipment setup ensured optimal accuracy.

 Data Collection:

7
Field measurements commenced by capturing points along the previously established perimeter

markers.

3.1.2. DETAILING USING DGPS:

Detailed measurements were taken for all features within the project area. These features

included buildings, poles, and water tanks.

3.1.3. LEVELLING & SPOT HEIGHTENING:

 At station PL1, measurements were taken every 10 meters inward from the boundary line

using a steel tape.

 A tracking rod was positioned at each 10-meter interval, and observations were recorded

at these points.

 All data was subsequently recorded.

3.2. DATA DOWNLOADING AND PLAN PLOTTING:

After downloading the csv file (excel format) of the data collected on the site, we then proceeded

for plotting.

Using GIS softwares like;

 AutoCAD software
 Surfers

We were able to produce a digital Topographic map.

8
4.0. CHALLENGES FACED DURING THIS PRACTICAL

 Challenges related to satellite geometry, atmospheric conditions, or signal obstructions

were encountered.

 Errors occurred during the conversion of raw data to the desired format.

4.1. CONCLUSION
The practical successfully met its objectives and was conducted with accuracy.

As Surveying and Geo-informatics students, we have gained practical competence in

conducting topographic surveys using Differential GPS.
