WHAT I NEED TO KNOW

Introduction

Expect the unexpected! We live in a VUCA (volatile, uncertain,

complex, ambiguous) world. Recent events have proven time and time again
that we live in a world in which anything can change in a blink of an eye. We
never know what is round the corner, but we have to take it all in our stride.
Yes, uncertainty is scary, but we shouldn’t let it stop us in our tracks.
The lesson prepared for you in this module will highlight universal
human values that remain the same throughout the years. This will guide you
in your journey through life and will help you realize that no matter how
different you might become in the future, your value system should remain
intact.
Furthermore, this lesson will help you understand that life is made
more meaningful through literary pieces, reading selections, viewing materials
that are filled with worthwhile values.
This module exposes you to literary texts and activities that lets you see
the big picture and open your horizon to rediscover deep unchanging values
that can help you navigate those difficult situations, feel more connected with
others, and have healthier and better outcomes in the end.

Learning Competency:

Analyze literature as a means of understanding unchanging values in the

VUCA (volatile, uncertain, complex, ambiguous) world.

We live in a VUCA world where rapid and unpredictable change has

become the norm.
But what does VUCA actually mean?
Volatile – Change is violent and uncontrollable.
Uncertain – The future is unpredictable, making it hard to prepare for.
Complex – With so much going on, things can often feel chaotic and
confusing.
Ambiguous – We lack clarity because it’s hard to know what the root cause
of the problem is.
A VUCA environment can be dangerous and disruptive. So it’s vital that
we know how to cope. Turn VUCA to your advantage using these four steps:

Downloaded by Joeselyn Vicera (joeselyn.vicera@deped.gov.ph)

lOMoARcPSD|16148139

1. Counter volatility with vision. Create a compelling vision and values for
your people. This will give a clear focus and help to react quickly to change.
2. Meet uncertainty with understanding. When you are “in the know” you’ll
be able to anticipate threats and take advantage of new opportunities.
3. React to complexity with clarity. Be crystal clear when you communicate,
and promote teamwork and collaboration.
4. Fight ambiguity with agility. Stay adaptable, even when during uncertain
times. Encourage others to learn new skills, stimulate debate, and
embrace creativity.
At the end of the module, you should be able to:

1. Identify unchanging values presented in a text;

2. Suggest ways of expressing values that society need today; and

3. Appreciate the importance of practicing values when confronted

with difficult situations.

Please take note that all answers shall be written in your activity
notebooks, and that there should never be any markings placed in this
module.

3. What are some of the values that teenagers like you should
exemplify?
4. Enumerate at least 5 values that people should practice nowadays.

WHAT IS IT

For a couple of years, the notion of "VUCA" is gaining popularity as a

term to cover the various dimensions of this ‘uncontrollable’ environment
(Kraaijenbrink 2018). But what does being and living in a VUCA world really
mean? Sure, VUCA is an acronym. It stands for Volatile, Uncertain, Complex
and Ambiguous.
Living in this VUCA world prompts people to react to changes. These
actions stem from people’s behavior and values. Read the article below to find
out what unchanging values teenagers must uphold in today’s society.

Upholding Values in Today’s Society

By Teresa Mercer, Youth First, Inc.

I have worked with people of all ages, and that has given me the unique
experience of learning about the different value systems of many people. It
has been very interesting to listen to every person’s story and what is
important in their life, whether they are 6 or 60 years old.

Values reflect our sense of right and wrong. They help us grow and
develop. They help us create the future we want. The decisions we make every
day are a reflection of our values.

We learn most of our values from our parents and extended families.
Our family values stem from our social and cultural values. Sometimes new
life experiences may change values we previously held.

Individual values reflect how we live our life and what we consider
important for our own self-interests. Individual values include enthusiasm,
creativity, humility and personal fulfillment.

Relationship values reflect how we relate to other people in our life, such
as friends, family, teachers, managers, etc. Relationship values include
openness, trust, generosity and caring.

Social values reflect how we relate to society. Social values include

justice, freedom, respect, community, and responsibility.

Downloaded by Joeselyn Vicera (joeselyn.vicera@deped.gov.ph)

lOMoARcPSD|16148139

In today’s world, it may seem our society doesn’t practice many values.
We have a rise in discrimination, abuse of power, greed, etc. What are we
leaving behind for our future generations? Maybe it’s time society takes a hard
look at its values.

Here are some things I feel our society needs more of:

Empathy – Empathy is defined as understanding and sharing the

feelings of another. People need to understand who others are and accept who
they are. Focusing on how we can grow together should be our ultimate goal.
Respect – Mutual respect is needed for all of us. This is what makes us
human. Having respect for everyone, despite the differences between us, is
vital in order for a society to function well.
Love – Having love in our hearts keeps us from feeling the need to harm
others. Love helps us acknowledge the similarities we all share rather than
the differences of color, religion or sexual orientation.
Loyalty – Loyalty is a value that binds us to a person, thing or
sentiment. With loyalty, we do not betray. If we all shared loyalty, it would
help us build the strength needed to stand up against something that would
harm our society.
Honesty – One form of honesty in society is accepting yourself. With
honesty, you can admit your flaws and take the necessary steps to improve
yourself. When we can admit to our flaws it can help someone else admit
theirs. Ultimately, we can all help each other become better people.
Values can be contagious; if you practice them, many others will also,
including our children. Hopefully more practice from all of us will leave the
world a better place for future generations.

What have you learned from your reading?

Do you agree with what Mercer had suggested?

WHAT I CAN DO

Read carefully the excerpt of an editorial written by Atty. Jose C. Sison

and answer the questions comprehensively. Use your notebook for your
answers.

Unchanging Values

“The last weekend World Meeting on the Family held in Valencia Spain brought
to the fore once more, man’s difficulty in maintaining a balance between the old
and the new (Sison 2006). The ever changing world constantly brainwashes
man to adopt everything new at the expense of old traditional values because
modern technological advances seem to have rendered these values obsolete.
The constant flux in the world has indeed rendered man vulnerable to all sorts
of changes including those affecting the unchanging Gospel values. Hence the
news reports about the said world congress have mentioned that Pope Benedict
XVI himself deemed it worthwhile to travel to Spain as part of his campaign in
defense of traditional family precisely because Spain is a predominantly
Catholic Country that now allows gay marriage, divorce and abortion.

To be sure even our own home front is beleaguered with so many moves to
introduce changes that are anti-family and anti-life. In the Senate, six bills on
reproductive health, population policy, two-child policy and sex education for
the youth are now being discussed and considered by the Committees on
Health and Demography, Youth, Women and Family Relations, Ways and

Means and Finance. These are Senate Bills (SB) 81, 1280, 1281, 1480, 1546,
and 1816.”

Comprehension Questions:

1. According to the article, what makes man consider traditional values

obsolete?

2. What are the unchanging values explicated by the author in this editorial?

“The worst part is the deceptive manner of introducing the methods mentioned
in the bills to make them acceptable. Emphasis is laid on the supposed
"reproductive health" that they are supposed to achieve when in fact the
ultimate effects are harmful physically and morally. Our Senators perhaps are
not aware that "reproductive health" is a universally accepted term used in
international conferences as to include abortion which is illegal in this
jurisdiction. Furthermore the effects of the use of contraceptives do not really
contribute to reproductive health care. The WHO report says that oral
contraceptives are carcinogenic to humans. Statistics from countries allowing
contraceptives also show that it leads to abortion which, in turn has so many
adverse consequences on the family and society like broken marriages, divorce,
drug addiction and rise in criminality.

It is true that the only constant thing in this world is change. But not all changes
are for the better. In making changes therefore we have to apply some "brakes"
in the form of the traditional values arising from the eternal teachings of Christ
in the Gospel.”

a. What issue is presented in this editorial?

b. What is the suggested solution to the problem according to the author?

c. As a teenager who’s confronted with the present belief and value system,
how will you retain or keep ‘unchangeable’ the traditional values you have
learned from your family, school and community?

Finally, you were able to tackle the different related activities to sharpen
your skills on the different issues, concerns, or dispositions of our world,
country, or family. Now, it’s time to evaluate your learning.

ADDITIONAL ACTIVITIES

This song makes the case that truth is harder to find than love. A
gripping song dissecting the lack of shame in society. Joel sings about how
he can find someone to comfort him with promises, but honesty is far rarer.
You can be in love with someone, but it doesn't mean you're going to have
truth (n.a. 2020).
Listen attentively to the Lyrics of the song, “Honesty”. Be ready to
answer the following questions.

HONESTY
By Billy Joel
[Verse 1]
If you search for tenderness
It isn't hard to find
You can have the love you need to live
But if you look for truthfulness
You might just as well be blind
It always seems to be so hard to give

[Chorus]
Honesty is such a lonely word
Everyone is so untrue
Honesty is hardly ever heard
And mostly what I need from you

[Verse 2]
I can always find someone

To say they sympathize

If I wear my heart out on my sleeve
But I don't want some pretty face
To tell me pretty lies
All I want is someone to believe

[Bridge]
I can find a lover
I can find a friend
I can have security
Until the bitter end
Anyone can comfort me
With promises again
I know, I know

[Verse 3]
When I'm deep inside of me
Don't be too concerned
I won't ask for nothin' while I'm gone
But when I want sincerity
Tell me where else can I turn
Cause you're the one that I depend upon.

Questions:
1. What values are being mentioned in the song?
2. Among these values, what do you think the values

3. If you were in his stead, what value would you
