I want to share an update on the Trust Analytics situation—including our next steps to
address this important issue. We have a responsibility to protect your data and privacy, and if
we can’t then we don’t deserve to serve you. I’ve been working to understand exactly what
happened and how to make sure this doesn’t happen again. The good news is that the most
important actions to prevent this from happening again today we have already taken years ago.
But we also made mistakes, there’s more to do, and we need to do it.
Last week, we learned that Trust Analytics may not have deleted the data as they had
certified. We immediately banned them from using any of our services. Trust Analytics claims
they have already deleted the data and has agreed to a forensic audit by a firm we hired to
confirm this. We’re also working with regulators as they investigate what happened.
This was a breach of trust between Trust Analytics and us, but it was also a breach of trust
between us and you who share your data with us and expect us to protect it. We need to fix
that.
In this case, we already took the most important steps a few years ago in 2014 to
prevent bad actors from accessing people’s information in this way. We will investigate all apps
that had access to large amounts of information before we changed our platform to
dramatically reduce data access in 2014, and we will conduct a full audit of any app with
suspicious activity. We will ban any developer from our platform that does not agree to a
thorough audit. And if we find developers that misused personally identifiable information, we
will ban them and tell everyone affected by those apps.
I want to thank you who continue to believe in our mission and work to build this
community together. I know it takes longer to fix all these issues than we’d like, but I promise
you we’ll work through this and build a better service over the long term.
Sincerely,
Ian Ross

A. Lucy Maud Montgomery’s first novel, Anne of Green Gables (1908), became an instant
bestseller and has remained in print for more than a century, making the character of Anne
Shirley a mythic icon of Canadian culture. The book has sold an estimated 50 million copies
worldwide, been translated into at least 36 languages, and been adapted more than two
dozen times in various mediums. A musical version first produced by the Charlottetown
Festival in 1965 is the longest running annual musical theatre production in the world, while
the award‐winning 1985 CBC miniseries is the most‐watched television program in Canadian
history. Thousands of tourists visit Prince Edward Island each year to see the “sacred sites”
related to the book, and the sale of Anne‐related merchandise has come to constitute a
cottage industry.
B. Released in June 1908, the book sold more than 19,000 copies in its first five months and
was re‐printed ten times in its first year. It garnered widespread acclaim, including
endorsements from author Mark Twain, who called Anne “the dearest, most moving and
delightful child since the immortal Alice.” By the end of the First World War, Lucy Maud
Montgomery was a household name throughout the English‐speaking world. The universal
appeal of Anne of Green Gables was also quickly apparent through its popularity in other
cultures. By 1925, it had been translated into Swedish, Dutch, Norwegian, Finnish and
French.
C. The book has enjoyed its highest degree of popularity outside Canada in two countries:
Poland, where it was translated and published in seven editions between
the First and Second World Wars and was voted the fourth most popular book in a 1932 poll
conducted by Ruch Pedagogiczny magazine; and Japan, where it resonated with an
orphaned population following the war and has been a mandatory part of the public school
curriculum since 1952.
D. Anne of Green Gables has remained in print for more than 100 years, and has never waned
in popularity. It has been called “Canada’s most enduring literary export.” A 2003 BBC
survey called The Big Read, which aimed to determine Britain’s best‐loved novel,
ranked Anne of Green Gables at No. 41, ahead of F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby,
George Orwell’s Animal Farm and Charles Dickens’s A Christmas Carol. In 2012, Anne was
ranked No. 9 in a survey of children’s novels by the US‐based School Library Journal, while a
2014 reader poll conducted by CBC Books declared Anne Shirley Canada’s most iconic
fictional character.
Renting tends to come with lower carrying costs than owning. Typically, all you’ll have to
worry about paying as a renter is, well, the rent and perhaps a share of utilities. This leaves you
with extra monthly cash flow that you can invest, which can ultimately put you on even
financial footing or better with a homeowner.
Renting makes it easier to move. If you’d like to relocate to another part of the city or
country, it’s usually as simple as giving your landlord 60 days written notice. When you own a
home you’re more tied down. If you get a great job opportunity somewhere else, it’s tougher to
relocate.
Using the drop‐down menu ( ), choose the best option according to the information given on
the website.
1. The author wanted to _________.
a. convince the readers that renting is not always a bad idea
b. compare renting to owning a house
c. show the additional costs of owning a house

SAMPLE ANSWERS
WRITING ‐ Task 1
Dear Customer Service Team,
I purchased some clothes from your website on August 18, 2019, and my order number is
#1023657. I purchased a black leather jacket in medium. I am writing this e‐mail to request a
refund on that jacket.
The quality of this leather jacket really disappoints me. First of all, the size is not consistent with
your other products. I have always ordered size medium on your website, and the clothes fit me
perfectly. However, this jacket is way too baggy. Secondly, the quality of the leather doesn’t
reflect the premium price. When I opened the plastic wrap, the jacket smells more like chemical
rather than genuine leather. The creases don’t look natural either. When I observed the edges
of the sleeves, they are too smooth for real leather. I am not an expert, but it suspect that it
may not even be real leather.
Even though the deadline to return the item has passed, I hope that your store will do the right
thing and give me a refund on the jacket. If you continue shipping products with inferior quality
Task 2
As a frequent visitor of the library, I am glad that the library decided to make an investment to
expand the library’s collection. I agree that it is important to introduce the culture of reading to
the younger members of the community. For that reason, I would prefer that we buy more
children books.
I am a father of a 6 year‐old son. He likes to come with me when I borrow some sci‐fi novels or
some DVDs. At that time, he mostly spends his time at the kids’ corner and play with other kids.
However, I noticed that most of them were not reading books, they were playing games
instead. Since they are kids, they will scream or cry causing considerable noise that may bother
other visitors. We should not buy more games and exacerbate the situation.
If we have more interesting children books available at the kids’ corner, children will probably
sit quietly and enjoy the books. We can also have one of the librarians read stories to the
children which I am sure will draw lots of kids which is what the library wants. Children can
learn so much from these books and explore their interests.
Thank you for giving me the chance to express my opinion on this matter. I hope the committee
agrees with my choice.
SPEAKING
Task 1
Hi Marc,
I think it is important that you get along well with your roommate. You know you will at least
live with him for another year, if not longer. When I was in university, I also had some issues
with my roommate, but they were nothing that we couldn’t solve. Maybe I can give you some
suggestions based on my own experience. First of all, you need to have an open conversation
with him. What I mean is you need to tell each other what are the expectations from the other
roommate. We don’t always have the same lifestyle, and we need to have a discussion about
that. We sometimes don’t realize that what we do may bother the other person. Second, after
you know what each of you wants, you can start laying the ground rules. When you set these
rules, consider what’s reasonable for the other person. That’s why I said you should have an
open conversation in the first place. You can think of a way to motivate both of you to stick to
the rules. As an example, between my roommate and I, when one of us broke the rule, that
person had to buy the other lunch. Lastly, if both of you can’t come to an agreement, consider
asking someone, like your landlord to intervene. The landlord most likely has had to deal with
CELPIP TEST SAMPLE © 2019 – www.PrestoEnglish.com 32 | P a g e
tenants like you guys. At the end of the day, I am sure if you’re willing to make peace with your
roommate, you will be able to find a solution that satisfies both parties.
Task 2
When I was little, every New Year’s Day, my family would go to our grandmother’s house. It is
our culture to gather at our grandmother’s house and have a meal together. The house is a
spacious 2‐story house with a big living room. On that day, just like the previous years, my
grandma cooked my favorite dish, the shrimp pancakes along with some other dishes. The
shrimp pancakes was the dish that I always looked forward to when we visited her house. On
that New Year’s Day, I would also bow in front of my uncles and aunts, and in return they will
give red envelopes filled with some money. As a kid, I couldn’t hide my excitement when they
handed me the red envelopes, because I could use the money to buy whatever I wanted. This
gathering would typically last a few hours. After sharing a meal, we would talk and listen to
some stories from some family members. Finally, before we went home, I said my goodbye to
all my relatives, and our grandmother gave us a big bag full of fruits and food that she
prepared.
Task 3
This is a picture of a crowded dog park. Apparently, there is a dog wash event happening
because, in the background, I can see a banner hung on the roof of a pink house that says ‘dog
wash today’. It looks like a very chaotic scene. Not far from the house, I see a lady trying to
catch her dog that’s running away from her. In front of her, a man is watching her while is dog
is standing calmly beside him. Now, in the foreground, the kids are playing with the dogs. A boy
is washing his dog in a large bucket of water and soap. He looks very excited. And to his right, a
girl is holding a water hose. The mother in front of her is telling her not to aim the hose at her
because it scares her dog. And another girl is trying to keep her dog from running away. She’s
holding onto the leash very strongly because the dog keeps fighting her. I don’t know the
different breeds of dogs, but one the bottom left, there’s a dog that looks like a Dachshund to
me because of the short legs and long body and he’s running around freely.
Task 4
I will try to make some predictions of events that may happen. First, the dog that’s being
washed will start to jump up and down because he doesn’t like being washed with soap. The
water will splash everywhere causing everyone to get wet. The old lady with the yellow shirt
will scream because her favorite sweater is now soaking wet and her make‐up is completely
ruined. She will run to the house quickly to dry herself. At that time, I am guessing the blonde
girl will point the hose to the dog in the bucket to wash the soap off her. She will laugh because
she accidentally splays water at the boy too. Meanwhile, the other girl with the black hair may
Task 5
Hey Sheila, I know you've been dying to watch In Love, but I don't think we should go watch
that movie today. We are going with Josh and he's too young to watch that movie.
He's only 12, and I don't want him to watch a movie about romance. He’s probably gonna be
bored too. We should go watch Lion's Den instead. He likes animals, and I've read great things
about the movie on the internet.
It may seem like a kid's movie, but some of my friends who've watched the movie
recommended that I watch it too. I am not big on adventure movies, but after reading the
reviews, I am kinda curious too. Knowing you, I am sure you will enjoy this movie too.
I know you like those girly movies, maybe you and I can go watch In Love another time.
Tomorrow, you and I have a morning class too, so I am not too keen on the idea of watching a
movie at 9pm. If we watch Lion's Den, we can have dinner after the movie and be home by 8pm
which is perfect.
I promise I’ll go with you to the theatre next weekend, so let’s go watch Lion’s Den today with
Josh, okay?
Task 6
Hi Adam,
I heard from your dad that you wanted to be a singer. I think it’s great that you have a dream
you want to pursue. I know that your father is against your decision, and I think it may be
worthwhile to listen what he has to say. I am not saying that you should throw away your
dream, but I want you to consider what’s best for your future. In fact, while attending college,
you can still practice singing, for example, you can join a band as a vocalist. Your father’s
concern is definitely not without reason. I have some friends who are barely making ends meet
working as musicians. They often need to borrow money from friends and family members, and
they don’t seem too happy with their own situations either even though they thought they are
doing what they dream of. So I hope you’d consider your decision one more time. Remember,
you can still continue singing while in college, but you will learn other skills that will get you a
job after you graduate. With the money you make after you graduate, if it is still something that
you want to do, you can go to a vocal academy.
Task 7
CELPIP TEST SAMPLE © 2019 – www.PrestoEnglish.com 34 | P a g e
From my point of view, companies shouldn’t intrude on the applicants’ privacy by scouring their
social media accounts. I have several reasons for my opinion. First, we should be allowed to
separate our personal lives from our professional lives. What we do in our own time shouldn’t
be the concern of our employers. They say that our actions also represent the company’s.
However, in most cases, people don’t display their professional identities outside work. Of
course there are exceptions, such as in the case of high profile figures, but for most of us, that
isn’t the case. Companies are worried employees’ activities outside work may negatively
influence the reputation. However, I believe that people today are much more educated. They
don’t quickly judge a company based on just one of the employees’ behavior. So if the company
is behaving responsibly, they shouldn’t worry that an individual’s action can tarnish their public
image. A company with a strong culture and ethics will be able to withstand such incidents. On
the other hand, a company with questionable ethics will likely to suffer greatly.
Secondly, what’s on our social media accounts is not always within our control. Because of the
social aspect of these applications, other people are able to post content that may be linked to
us, even though we don’t necessarily agree or approve the content. For example, a person was
recently denied entry to the United States because of what his friend said in his social media
account. Such situations can disadvantage an innocent person and cost him a job.
For those reasons, I disagree with allowing companies to check applicants’ social media profiles.
Task 8
Hi Trevor,
Do you remember the poster about a sports event on campus that we saw on our way to the
cafeteria last week? Well, I am in front of the park and apparently the event is starting today. It
looks really fun. They have erected a tall structure that looks like a giant wall. The wall maybe is
around 15 feet tall. I see two girls ran towards the wall and jumped as high as they could. On
top of the wall, their team members bend down and stretch their arm, trying to catch the girls. I
think one of the girls will succeed while the other may have to try again. I guess the goal is to
help the teammate to jump over the wall. It’s very crowded here, people are all cheering for
the participants. The staff members wearing yellow vests are on stand‐by in case someone gets
hurt. This is a team event, and I was wondering if you want to join and do this with me. The
registration is still open until this afternoon, so I thought I’d give you a call to ask you.
