HandKey CR Installation Manual

Introduction, biometrics
Biometrics is a term describing measurement and comparison of human characteristics. While
its origins are ancient, the evolution of advanced scanning and microprocessor technology
brought biometrics into everyday life. Electronic hand geometry technology first appeared in
the 1970’s. Recognition Systems Inc. began operations in 1986. We built the first mass-
produced hand geometry readers and made biometric technology affordable for the commercial
market. Today, Recognition Systems’ products are in use in every imaginable application from
protecting cash vaults to verifying parents in obstetric wards.

About HandKey CR
HandKey CR is Recognition Systems’ fourth generation biometric access control terminal. It
records and stores the three-dimensional shape of the human hand for comparison and identity
verification. It outputs card reader format and can communicate with other hand readers or a
host computer. It has two auxiliary outputs to control other systems such as CCTV cameras,
and alarms.

How it works
The hand reader uses low-level infrared light and optics and a CCD (chip) camera to capture a
three-dimensional image of the hand. Using advanced microprocessor technology, the terminal
converts the image to a nine-byte template. It stores the template in database with the user’s ID
number. To gain access, the user enters his or her ID number at the terminal or a remote card
reader. HandKey CR prompts the user to place his or her hand. The terminal compares the
hand on the platen with user’s unique template. If the images match, HandKey CR sends the
user’s ID number in card data format to an access control panel or host computer for
processing.

Planning an installation

Check the site

Before you begin installation, check the site blueprints, riser diagrams and specifications for
important information about hand reader terminal location and other systems that connect to
the
HandKey. Look for any existing wall preparations and wiring that other contractors may have
installed for the hand reader terminals.

Hand Reader Placement

The recommended height for the hand reader platen is 40 inches (102 cm.) from the finished
floor. The reader should be out of the path of pedestrian and vehicular traffic and convenient
to the door it is controlling. Avoid placing the reader where users must cross the swing path of
the door. It should be in an area where it is not exposed to excessive airborne dust, direct
sunlight or water and chemicals.

Plan the wiring

There are three basic circuits typically connected to the hand reader:

• Power input
• Card reader output
• Communications

Power
The hand reader requires 12 to 24 Volts AC or DC and consumes 7 watts.
Power connects to terminals 1 and 2 on the terminal strip.
It is not necessary to use a regulated power supply. 18 GA. wiring is recommended.

Recommended power supply: RSI part number PS-20X. Plug in supply, with 6 foot lead.

3
HandKey CR Installation Manual

Card reader output

When a user successfully verifies, the hand reader outputs data in card format.

Inputs and outputs:

• Card reader outputs: Data 0/Data, Data 1/Clock with a ground.
• 2 programmable auxiliary outputs for alarms and other controllers
• Input terminals for Wiegand or magnetic stripe card readers.

The auxiliary outputs are the “open collector” type that switch to ground when activated.
Relays or devices connected to the auxiliary outputs must not exceed 0.1 amperes current
draw.

See Appendix I, Card reader wiring diagram.

Card reader emulation mode

The reader sends the card number (ID number) to the panel only when a user successfully
verifies.
The ID number may be entered via the integrated keypad or an external card reader.
If the ID number is entered via the card reader, the hand reader stores the card data, then sends
it to the panel when the user successfully verifies. If the user enters the ID number from the
keypad, the hand reader sends the ID number in card format with a pre-programmed facility
code (Wiegand only).

See page 20, CARD READER WIRING

Networking and Communications

The hand reader can be configured in three ways:
• Stand alone
• Hand reader network
• Hand reader network with a host PC
Any of these network configurations may be used with the card reader output mode.

Stand-alone
When installed as a stand-alone access control, there is no communication wiring to other
readers or a host computer. Power input and data output wiring are all that are required.

Hand Reader Network

Up to 32 hand readers can be linked together using 4 wire RS-485 (RS422) wiring. Two
twisted pair, shielded, 22 gauge wire or larger should be used. The wiring must be in a
“daisy chain” network from reader to reader and may not exceed 4000 feet (1220 meters)
in total length.
The master-remote network requires users to enroll at the “master” hand reader. It distributes
hand template data with ID numbers to the other hand readers in the network. Users removed
at the master hand reader are automatically removed from the remote readers. The master-

4
HandKey CR Installation Manual

remote network can is highly effective for systems with user populations smaller than 500
people as it does not require a host computer.

See page 21, MASTER-REMOTE WIRING

Hand reader/PC network Access Control

Multiple hand readers can be linked to a PC (personal computer) for an integrated access
control network. You can use Recognition Systems’ optional HandNet for Windows© (RSI
part number HN-300) for systems that do not have template management functions. Users may
enroll at any hand reader in the system. The PC collects the data and distributes it to other
readers in the network.

Typically, hand reader networks link to a PC using a 4 wire RS-485 (RS422) connection. A
network of two or more readers requires an RS 485(422) to RS 232 converter (RSI part number
DC-101) at the PC.

Many of the remote reader setup commands can be set from a host computer. However, each
reader on the network requires programming of the display language, date format and assigned
a network address. Each reader on a site (zone) must have a unique address. Reader addresses
may be repeated, but only on different sites.

See page 22, “PC NETWORK WIRING.”

Modems
An optional internal 14.4 bps modem is available for hand readers. It is designed for operation
with United States phone systems. Site wiring should conform to standard telephone wiring
standards and terminate at the reader with a standard RJ 11 modular phone jack. Each hand
reader with a modem includes a 12 inch (30 cm.) cable for the final connection between the
phone jack and the reader modem. Modem units may be networked with up to 31 readers using
RS485 4 wire (RS422) wiring.

See page 22, “PC NETWORK WIRING.”

Ethernet
Hand readers may be ordered with an optional Ethernet communications module for TCP/IP
communications. The Ethernet module is completely internal to the hand reader. The wiring
must conform to 10BaseT standards. Typically, network wiring terminates at the reader with a
standard RJ45 modular jack. The cable from the jack to the unit IS NOT provided with the
hand reader.
The IP address and Gateway are entered at the reader in the SET SERIAL menu.
Additional units may be networked to an Ethernet unit via RS485 4 wire (RS422). Up to 31
units may be connected to the reader containing the Ethernet module.

See page 22, PC NETWORK WIRING

Mechanical Installation

Select a location referring to the guidelines in the

installation planning section of this manual.

Remove the wall plate from the packing carton. Protect

the hand reader terminal from dust and debris during the
wall plate installation.
• Measure and mark a point 48-1/2 in. (123 cm.) to the
finished floor.
• For hollow walls, drive a small nail into the wall at
the mark and hang the wall plate from the notch located
near the top. Check to assure the back plate is level.
Secure it with tape if necessary
• For solid walls, place the notch at the mark, level the
wall plate and secure the plate with tape.
• Using the wall plate as a template, mark the locations
of the two holes near the top and three holes at the
bottom.

For concealed wiring, trace the outline of the open area

of the wall plate. Route wiring to enter the terminal in
this area.
For conduit wiring, mark the two holes on the right
side of the wall plate. Use ½ inch conduit entering the
unit from the right side.

• Remove the wall plate and nail and prepare the wall to
mount the wall plate.
Hollow walls:
Use the provided hardware to mount the wall plate. The
auger style fasteners are for the two upper mounting holes.
The molly bolts are for the three lower mounting holes.
Cut out the open area to allow for wire entry

Concrete walls:
Expansion bolts should be used for concrete walls. Drill ¼
in. diameter hole ¼ in deeper than the anchor length for
all (5) mounting holes. For surface conduit installations,
prepare two additional holes for the conduit clamp. Route
½ in. conduit to stop between the two conduit clamp holes.
• Wiring can now be pulled to the reader.

6
HandKey CR Installation Manual

Finishing up
After wiring has been pulled to the terminal, the
mechanical installation can be completed.

• Loosen the three bottom mounting screws until

there is approximately 1/8 in. (3 mm.) clearance
between the screw head and the wall plate.
• Remove the terminal from the carton and hang it
on the three screws at the bottom of the wall plate.
Tighten all screws. Protect the terminal from debris
and damage while completing the installation.
• Make final wiring connections to the unit’s
terminal strips and connectors. Refer to the chart
below for terminal strip and jack locations. Typical
systems wiring diagrams are in the appendix.
• Set network dip switches if necessary. See page

Setting the dip switches network applications

In a networked system, the dip switches must be set for

proper network communications. The switches control
• The type of communications, 4 wire RS485 (RS422)
or RS485
• End of line terminations

Switch 3 – Communications method

OFF - 4 wire RS485 (RS422)
ON – 2 wire RS485

The default setting is for RS485 4 wire communications,

the method RSI recommends for reliable
communications. All units in the network must be set
the same. Four wire RS485 is required for HandNet for
Windows© network installations. (Older hand reader
systems used 2 wire RS 485 communications).

Switch 1 and 2 – End of Line (EOL)Termination

These two switches should always both be set to the
same position
OFF – Not at the end of the network.
ON - At the end of the network (EOL).

The default position is OFF. When a reader is at the end

of the network (the end of the line), Switch 1 and 2
should be turned to the ON position. There are always
two ends to any daisy chained networked, so there will
always be only two terminals in a network with the end
of line termination turned ON.

Memory
The default setting (4 & 5 off) retains memory.
To erase the user memory and reset the setup programs
to factory default (total reset), set switches 4 and 5 on,
remove and reapply power. To erase the setup programs
to factory default without erasing the user database,
switch 4 on, remove and reapply power.
Important! If you reset the memory, be sure switches 4
& 5 are “off” before putting the terminal in service.
