The Department of Public Works and Infrastructure seconded me to IX Engineers where I gained experience in all
six phases of building services (i.e. HVAC, fire protection and wet services) projects:
 Inception
 Concept design and viability
 Design development
 Documentation and procurement
 Construction
 Close-out

3, Nature of problems:
I attended site briefing meetings to note the project’s demand then advised the client from an engineering point of
view. I prepared site measurements and condition assessment of mechanical equipment. I also did design
calculations using engineering software packages in parallel with hand calculations as a form of validating the
results from the computer programmes. I researched and consulted SANS standards for the inputs of my
calculations. Prior requesting the quotations from the suppliers and manufacturers of mechanical equipment, I
prepared the engineering drawings using AutoCAD software for project cost estimates purposes. I also prepared
the engineering specifications the contractor had to follow. During construction phase I was responsible for
construction monitoring of the project.
4, Documentation and presentations:

I prepared the project programme indicating the time frame to start and finish the activities under the mechanical
engineering scope of works. I produced the design drawings and bill of quantities. I also prepared both the
preliminary and detailed design reports.
I made presentations to the panel (i.e. mentor, chief engineers and director of projects) updating them about my
progress to ECSA registration.
5, Construction management:
I monitored the contractor’s work ensuring the work was done as per the project plan, design drawings and
engineering specifications.
6, Health and safety:

I produced the engineering specifications that catered for health and safety on site. I also checked with the safety
officer to confirm whether health and safety regulations were implemented as per the Occupational Health and
Safety Act 85 of 1993 (construction regulations).
