Factoring Quadratic and Polynomial Expressions

SAT Mathematics Reasoning

Lesson Objectives:

● Factoring Quadratic Equation

● Understanding Special Factoring
● Using the Foil Method
Let us factorize the quadratic equation given above

Step 1: Check for the greatest common factor.

Step 2: Factor the trinomial inside the parenthesis

here
Step 3: Find two numbers with a product equal to c
and a sum equal to b.

∴ the factors are

Special Factoring

Square of sum:

Square of difference:

Difference of squares:
Example of Special Factoring
Factorize

Step 1: Factor out any common factors if possible.

In this case there is no common factor

Step 2: Recognize that one or more terms in the expression are

perfect squares.
Here 4 , 9 are perfect squares

Step 3: Confirm that all of the terms in the expression satisfy the
criteria for special factoring.
4= square of 2
9= square of 3
12= 2 X 2 X 3
Step 4: Apply the appropriate special factoring rule.

Hence we can apply the following identity here

Therefore we can directly write -
