SECTION B: (50 MARKS)

51. Read the story below and then answer, in full sentences the questions that
follow.
In the olden days, there were few radios. Only rich people had radios. If one wanted to
listen to news, announcements etc. one would go to a home which had a radio. The
owner of the radio could increase the volume so that people gathered around could
hear well.

In Kadama village, Mr. Wakida had a big radio and so did his neighbour Mujaawa. People
used to flock to their homes every evening especially at 7:00pm to listen to the Luganda
news. The news broadcasts were in both English and Luganda. Personally, I used to like
the Luganda news as I wasn’t fluent in English. After the news, we used to like the gospel
music which was often played after the announcements. After listening to the news and
other programmes, everyone went back to their homes well acquainted with currect
affairs.

Today, things have greatly improved. Most homes own a radio. Besides, there are also
televisions. These are used to listen and view (watch) news, announcements, music and
other entertainment programmes. As opposed to the previous days, today, there are
devices that make us listen to music and watch films. The DVD (Digital Video Disc) or
Digital Versatile Disc, CD (Compact Disc) help to store information. This information can
be played as music or films for our enjoyment.

Listening to radios and watching televisions is not only for the purpose of getting news.
It is also used for recreation reasons. Some people take it as a fact of entertainment
and enjoyment.

My best friend is a diary,

In which I write future events to happen.
My mobile phone is never off
Because people use it to update me
Under hard situations, I work;
Travelling to near and far places,
Discovering what is taking place.

Whatever has happened, I bring it to you

Whether good or bad, it matters less
The weather condition is not a problem,
Because I have to report, come what may.
When people are jubilating, I am part;
When bullets are being fired, I cover.
When tear gas is fired, I witness.

When I write what I saw,

You read it from the newspapers;
When I cover what I witnessed,
You watch it over televisions;
When I record what I heard,
You hear it over the radio;
From Monday to Sunday, I am present,
January to December I am on my footsteps
8
