Introduction to objectives of safety.
• Definition of Safety:
• Safety encompasses practices, policies, and behaviors that prevent harm and
promote well-being.

• Objectives of Safety:
• Protect employees, visitors, and the environment.
• Minimize accidents, injuries, and health risks.
• Comply with legal requirements.
• Foster a safety culture.
Introduction to objectives of safety.
Why Safety Matters

1. Employee Well-Being:
1. Healthy employees are more productive and engaged.
2. Safety reduces absenteeism and turnover.

2. Organizational Benefits:
1. Enhanced reputation.
2. Cost savings (fewer accidents, insurance premiums).
3. Legal compliance.
Introduction to objectives of safety.
Safety in Different Industries:

1. Industry-Specific Risks:
1. Construction: Falls, heavy machinery.
2. Healthcare: Infections, patient handling.
3. Manufacturing: Machinery, chemicals.

2. Tailoring Safety Practices:

1. Customize safety protocols based on industry context.
Introduction to objectives of safety.
• Industrial Accidents Overview:
• Types of Accidents:
• Falls, slips, and trips.
• Machinery-related incidents.
• Chemical spills or exposure.
• Fires and explosions.
• Electrical accidents.
Introduction to objectives of safety.
• Prevention Measures:
• Training
• Risk assessments
• Safety protocols.
• Proper equipment maintenance.
• Emergency response planning.
Basic HSE Definitions
• Safety: Condition of being safe, or freedom from danger.

• Accident: an event that takes place unexpectedly with unfortunate

results. (MOST ACCIDENTS ARE PREVENTABLE.)

• Incident: Includes all undesired circumstances and 'near-misses’,

which could cause accidents.
Principles of Health And safety At Work
• First Aid: Treatment given to a person who is injured or ill .

• Emergency: A situation which requires a very fast action.

• Hazard : Potential to cause harm.

Principles of health and safety at work
• Risk : Probability of the occurrence of the harm from a particular
hazard.

• RISK = ( chance of occurrence) x (level of damage floss/ injury)

Principles of health and safety at work
▪ Responsibilities of employers: moral, legal, economic
▪ Responsibilities and rights of workers
▪ Roles of enforcement authorities

• Before an accident / Incident at work

• After an accident / Incident at work
