G Reading: Recognizing paraphrasing

Read the article about a type of restaurant and choose the correct answer for each question.

Eating in the dark

Eating in the dark (or dining in the dark as it is sometimes called) is quite a recent idea. It seems to
have appeared in the late 1990s, when a restaurant was opened for a short time to offer people a
new way to experience their food. The idea was simple: customers eat with their eyes covered,
and as a result, enjoy the taste and smell of the food a lot more than they usually would.
Since then, more restaurants offering different versions of this experience have opened all over

the world, many of them permanently. In some, the room where people eat is completely dark,
and waiters wear special night vision glasses in order to see the people they are serving. In others,
customers’ eyes are covered using something like a scarf or cloth. Many places try to make the
experience different from that of a typical restaurant. They often have a themed menu and
include a show, such as the telling of a story.
Sometimes, restaurants where you can dine in the dark employ people who cannot see or who
have limited sight, and many dine-in-the-dark restaurants are owned by charities. They want to
raise money and share information about the problems experienced by people who have lost
their sight. The restaurants are also a way to share the sensations that people with different types
of vision have when eating and moving around.
However, some restaurants have been criticized. A few people complained that the quality of the
food is lower because too much time and money is spent on creating the experience. This might
be because the customers enter the restaurant with the idea that eating in the dark will make the
food taste better. This isn’t always true. Being in the dark can make you more aware of what you
are tasting and hearing, but the experience isn’t the same for everyone. As for the food, the
kitchens have lights, so not seeing shouldn’t be a problem for the chefs. Like all restaurants, there
are good ones and not so good ones. It is always a good idea to read the reviews before going to a
new restaurant, so why would dining in the dark be different?

Wherever you live in the world, there is probably a dining in the dark experience not too far away
from you, with restaurants in Asia, Europe, North and South America. If you are looking for
something a bit different, why not try one? Just make sure you read the reviews first to find the
perfect place for this unforgettable experience.
