5. Listening Part 1

Conversation : -1-

Mum: Hi Julia. Did you go shopping?

Julia: Yes ... I wanted a new dress for a party this weekend ...

Mum: Those don’t look like a dress!

Julia: I know. I tried on dresses in a few stores. There was this really nice purple one, but it
was expensive. Then I put on this striped T-shirt which combines with these brown
pants.

Mum: OK. You should wear your blue ankle boots with them.

Conversation: -2-

Katie: Did you have a good weekend?

Chris: Yes, I did.

Katie: Where did you go?

Chris: It was a busy weekend. We were going to see a baseball game, but it got canceled.
Then Mom suggested the theater. I wasn’t interested but my sister wanted to go.
We dressed up so I wore a long-sleeved shirt and pants. The funny thing is it was in
the park, so it was more relaxed. Later, we went for ice cream.

Katie: It sounds fun!

Conversation: -3-

Dad: Now children, remember what you need to do when we get to grandma’s house. She
doesn’t like a messy house so where should you put your coats? No! I don’t want
to see any coats on the armchair or sofa. You need to hang your coats up. There’s
a coat rack next to the front door. The heating will be on inside the house because
she needs a warm house.

Conversation: -4-

Ben: I totally got my clothes wrong today. The weather forecast said it was going to be
cold and windy. This morning I put on a long-sleeved shirt, and hoodie. Now it’s
really hot. I took my hoodie off an hour ago. What should I do?

Laura: Why don’t you roll up the sleeves? Yes, that’s right. Now you’re wearing a short-
sleeved shirt. I love this sunny weather!

Lily: Yes, I’m home now. My vacation was fantastic because we visited so many different
places. I climbed mountains, visited museums, and went shopping. No, I didn’t buy
the usual souvenirs like a T-shirt or hat. I got some new sneakers. I wore my old ones
out because of walking. The new ones are fantastic. They’re striped and comfortable.

Conversation: -6-

Mum: You can’t go outside like that. Your denim jacket is for summer.

Oliver: But I love this jacket!

Mum: It’s very cold and there is a strong wind. You should put your coat on. And bundle
up. For example, wear your scarf and hat too. I don’t want you to catch a cold in this
bad weather.

Conversation: -7-

Johanna: Look at me! I’m wearing jeans, a red T-shirt, and a pink hoodie.

Nancy: Uggh! I don’t think red and pink go together. You should take off the pink zip-up
hoodie.

Johanna: What should I wear?

Nancy: Do you have your light brown jacket? That would look perfect.

Johanna: OK ... Look at me now! This outfit is wonderful.

Key

1. Warm up

5 mins.
First, students describe their clothes. Encourage them to use sentences rather than single words. Use this
opportunity to see what clothing vocabulary they know.
Then students match the beginnings of the sentences to their correct endings. Tell them to ask and answer the
questions in pairs.

1. → e. 2. → f.
3. → b. 4. → c.
5. → a. 6. → d.

2. Focus on vocabulary

Part 1
5 mins.
First, allow learners to match, then read through the exam tip together. Highlight the examples given and see how
they would categorize the others.

Please note that in some parts of the United States "sneakers" are called "tennis shoes."
Part 2
5 mins.
Students list the possible compound words using the table. If they need a visual guide, they can refer to the
pictures in the previous exercise. Finally, they listen to the audio and tick the compound and add to their list.

1. striped, patterned, zip-up, plain

2. crewneck, patterned, V-neck, green, short-sleeved
3. plaid, short-sleeved
4. basketball, white, patterned, gray
5. high-heeled, lace-up
Extension: Students play a game. Student A describes a person by their clothing or compounds in the table, for
example I see a V-neck sweater. It’s blue. It’s a knitted sweater. Student B identifies the person by pointing at the
picture and saying its number.

3. Let’s play

5 - 10 mins.
Students play the game in pairs or in small teams. Encourage them to use phrases like It’s the opposite of ... (striped),
You use it in ... (cold weather), I always wear it when I ... (do exercise).
Extension:
To make the game more interesting, you can show the class a video with vocabulary cards. The video includes
twenty-four flashcards in general - one card with an image with a description, and one with a picture only - so
