Learning Activities

Essential Question
1. If using technology, refer to slide 4 of the slide presentation.
2. If not using technology, write the question on the board.
“Why is it important to respect others when speaking in public?”
3. Instruct the whole class to reflect on the question for at least a minute and call on a
few to share their answers. Make sure to elicit answers that state various reasons
why it is important to show respect for others when doing public speaking.

A. Motivation

Warm Up!

1. Instruct the students to do the following:

● Part 1: Form a group of three. Each member should choose an item within
the classroom and make up a story about that item and how it got its name.
● Part 2: Each member will take turns in telling the story within the group.
While one member is speaking, the other two members will observe the way
the speaker conducted himself or herself throughout the storytelling. Was
the speaker able to use proper language? Were there visual aids or
illustrations used?
● Part 3. After the storytelling, provide feedback for each member of the group,
especially in terms of appropriateness of language and visual
aids/illustrations used.

2. After the activity, have the students talk about the impact of language
appropriateness and visual aids in the presentation of the other groups. You may
ask the questions below if necessary.
● Did your group use proper language? How did it affect your presentation and
yourcredibility as presenters?
● Did your group use visual aids? How did using them help your presentation?

public.”

Review

Before proceeding to the lesson proper, ask the students the following:
● What language should we use when we speak in public?
● What should we use to enhance our presentation in public?

Presentation of Lesson

1. After the review of the lesson, proceed to the lesson proper.

2. If using technology, start from slide 7 of the slide presentation.

Discussion

Before discussing the concepts from the study guide, distribute copies of the two
sample texts below. You may print copies of the sample texts from here. Use the
sample speeches to further clarify the concepts in the study guide.

Are Filipinos weak in choosing politicians? Why do they keep on voting for
politicians who have a history of being corrupt? With the result of the recent
election, it seems as if they had not heard or seen the news. It seems that in every
election, the number of people who are uninformed about the truth increases. In
addition, it is so disheartening that the people who cast their votes unwisely are
the ones that usually complain about the government. Some people say that
corrupt politicians always buy the votes of such people. They would also tell them
lies in the form of promises. Well, the reason why they are always the target of
corrupt politicians is their inability to discern what is real news from what is not. If
this keeps on happening, what kind of future will they have?

Unit 16: Delivery in Public Speaking • Grade 10

Are Filipinos becoming dumber and dumber? Why do they keep on voting for
politicians who are obviously corrupt? With the result of the recent election, it
seems as if there are more idiots in our country than smart ones. It is clear that in
every election, the number of idiots proliferates. In addition, it is so depressing to
think that these dumb people are the ones who always complain about the slow
economic development of our country. Some people say that politicians always
buy the votes of such people. They would also tell them lies in the form of
promises. Well, the reason why they are always the target of corrupt politicians is
because they are simple-minded. It is even safe to say that such people have no
future because they don’t even think about it.

In the two sample speeches, it is clear that the first one is a better speech since it
does not use demeaning language. The use of words such as idiots and dumb people
in the second example make it demeaning and offensive. The first speech also
makes use of simple and neutral language and avoids words that are highfalutin,
like the word proliferates in the second example.

You may ask the students the following questions to facilitate a discussion regarding
the two speeches:

1. Which speech is the better one? Why do you say so?

2. Which words in the second example should be changed?
3. If you were to deliver a speech on the same topic, how else would you
improve the language you will use in the speech?

Possible Answers to the Essential Question

Possible answer 1: Speaking in public involves communicating to an audience composed

of people who have different backgrounds, experiences, and beliefs. It is thus important
to show them respect by making sure not to use demeaning or biased language.

Possible answer 2: Just as it is important to show respect to others when we speak with
them one-on-one, it is also important to be respectful when speaking in front of an
audience. In order to be respected and considered as a credible speaker, one should first
show respect to others.

Assignment
Instruct the students to do the following at home.

1. Think of a topic that interests you.

2. Prepare a short speech and visual aids for that topic.
3. Make sure to use appropriate language and visual aids.
