Best moments from the Olympics

Canada has got many reasons to be proud of its athletes. They are winning silver and gold medals at the
Sochi Winter Olympics in Russia. But these aren’t the only great moments for Canada in these games.
Canadian coach helps Russian athlete
Russian cross-country skier Anton Gafarov broke his ski during the Men’s Semi-finals. Nervous Russian fans
watched while Gafarov tried to continue on his broken ski, but it was too difficult. The fans were very worried
because they thought the race was over for the Russian athlete. Suddenly, the Canadian ski coach, Justin
Wadsworth, ran down to help him. Wadsworth gave the Russian athlete another ski so that he could finish the
race. That was a very generous act by our Canadian coach.
Speed skater Gilmore Junio helps a team member
Gilmore Junio grew up near a skating rink and practised almost every day. It was his dream to win a medal in
the Winter Olympics. But when he finally got to the Olympics, he decided to help a member of his team
instead. Canada’s best skater in the 1,000-metre race, Denny Morrison, fell in a competition before the
Olympics. Because of this, he lost his place in the 1,000-metre event. Junio thought Morrison had a better
chance of winning a medal than he did. So, he decided to give Morrison his place in the race. Morrison won a
silver medal for the Canadian team. Generous Junio wasn’t sorry about giving his place to Morrison because
it helped the team.
