“Men are my best customers and I get tips from them. There are women who stop my taxi
and when they realize it’s a woman behind the wheel, they tell me they did not stop me,
and I have gotten used to that now,” said the 48-year-old from Windhoek, who has been a
taxi driver since 2017.
She usually operates from 06h00 to 18h00 and hardly takes breaks for lunch.
During the weekend, she sometimes works until 22h00 because of the regular customers
she picks up and drops off to and from work and she drives throughout Windhoek as she
does not have favourite locations. Jacob says although she enjoys her job behind the
wheel, she also sees a brighter future for herself as a taxi and driving school owner when
she will just be pulling the strings from her office or from home.
“My father is the first person who taught me how to drive before I went to the driving
school,” she says. Jacob said she failed the learners test five times and the driving test
twice before she passed the practical driving test.
She obtained her learner’s license in 2015 and the driving license in 2016.
“I do not have high grades or qualifications, but I have a charming personality and great
strength which I can say is hard working, even she is a woman. I love working very hard
for myself,” she said. Jacob is planning to establish a driving school and she is currently
preparing a business plan for a driving school.
“I wasn’t dumb, but I just did not pay attention to my school work but because of my
perseverance and committed to my work, I am able to take care of myself and family, and
to give my children what I couldn’t get,” she said.
“It is not easy, but I chose to be a taxi driver because I can make a living from it. I can’t
give up all my time working for 30 days for little when I can earn as twice that as a taxi
driver,” she said. Jacob says she attracts stares wherever she goes in her taxi, she charged
N$13.00 per trip
“Once a male taxi driver almost rammed his car into another vehicle because he could not
take his eyes off me. I come across about 15 passengers a day who are amazed that a
woman drives a taxi, saying it’s their first time seeing one. She promotes her taxi business
through Facebooks and she also placed posters around Katutura.
She said when she was still new to the business, she once drove an intoxicated man from
Okahandja Park to Hakahana 4-way stop in 2016 and he got out and walked away without
paying. When I asked for my money he told me he was a soldier and a big man and he was
not going to pay me, so I drove off,” she remembers.
Jacob says she hopes to inspire other women to drive their own cars instead of having
someone drive for them, because they are being cheated of income by some drivers.
SAFETY
“On 27 March, the day the lockdown was declared, I took a man from the northern industrial
area around 17h00, saying he intended going to Katutura, he sat behind me, and directed me to
Golgotha next to the cemetery, said Jacob.
The man allegedly suddenly grabbed her by the neck from behind, wrapping his arms around her
neck until she could not breathe properly.
“I took out a pepper spray gun, but he grabbed it from me before I could use it. I told him not to
hurt me and that I would give him the money he demanded. He stole N$500 from me and jumped
into the cemetery,” she said, adding that such threats have, however, not discouraged her from
making a living.

After realising his people love marathon chicken, David Shikulo decided to use his
agricultural knowledge from school to start a poultry business.
Through his business Ekango Poultry, Shikulo provides the Onayena constituency and
surrounding areas with live chickens and eggs since September 2021. The 30 years old
told Youth Corner he always wanted to own a poultry farm and at the same time start a
business to help his fellow villagers fight poverty.
I dedicated all my effort to establishing this business to uplift our constituency, and also to
inspire those who gave up on their dreams and those who wish to start their businesses, he
said. Shikulo currently employs two men but aims to employ at least 10 youth from within
the constituency. He said it is the best way to meet government half way, fight poverty and
high employment.
The farm also suppliers some schools with eggs for their feeding programmes. The young
man has bigger plans and is looking in to opening Ekango Restaurant where locals can
enjoy delicious chicken and porridge. He said very soon he will approach local stores and
others countrywide to stock chicken and eggs from Ekango Poultry. Shikulo added that
he wants to see Ekango Poultry contributing to the development of this country in order
to benefit many people, he further stated that he wants to join association that deals with
farming, in order to meet other farmers for information sharing meetings. I spend most of
my time reading books on entrepreneurship and motivational quotes. That is the reason
I did not give up on my business, because I have always been motivated by the books I
read. Shikulo uses social media to communicate with his customers.
Shikulo said he was inspired by musician King Tee Dee, who provided him with business
ideas and advised him to chase his dreams. To my fellow youth, go after your dreams and
never give up. Life is full of obstacles, and you must be determined to overcome them in
order to succeed. Nothing comes easy in life he urged.
