The Story of Creation
In the beginning, the sea and the sky were the only things in the world. These two were
very close friends. One day Bathala, the god sent a bird. It flew around but saw nothing to land
on.
Day and night, the bird could not rest and became very tired. And because of this, the
bird decided to make the two friends quarrel. It flew in the sky and whispered some lies saying
that the sea is more powerful than the sky. Then, it went to the sea and said that the sea has no
match to the powers of the sky.
The sea declared war against the sky and threw water towards it. The sky made its
revenge by showering the sea with big boulders. These boulders became the islands. The sea
thought that the islands were stains on her face, so she went back and forth to wash out the
stains on her face but it’s useless, the islands still stay in place.
At last, the sea became tired and asked the sky to stop. The sky listened to her request
but refused to remove the boulder islands. Bathala approved that the boulder-islands will not be
removed for it will be inhabited by his next creations. As for the sea, she didn’t like the islands at
all so up until now, she keeps on dashing these islands with her waves.

The Centipede (excerpt)

I was thirteen when my father first took me hunting. All through the summer of the
year, I went alone and hunt the fields and forest around our farm. One afternoon in July my
father told me I could use his shotgun.
Beyond the Ipil-ipil trees, in a grassy field we spotted a group of brown wild ducks. In
the open, they kept flying to the air and escaping away every time we were within range.
But finally, they landed to the ground beside the guava tress. My father pressed my
shoulder and I stopped then slowly, we walk closer. My father stopped again. He knelt
down and held my hand.
“Wait for the birds to fly and then fire,” he whispered. I pushed the safety lever of the
rifle off and sighted along the barrel. The saddle of the stock felt greasy on my cheek. My
mouth was dry, I felt sick. I wanted to sit down.
“You forgot to spit”, my father said.
Father had told me that hunters always spit for luck before firing. I spat and I saw
the breeze bend ragged, glassy threads of spittle towards the birds. That’s good, Father
said.
“Can’t we throw a stone?” I whispered fiercely. “It’s taking a long time.”
No, you have to wait.
