Simple Past Tense

Simple past tense digunakan untuk menyatakan suatu perbuatan yang telah dilakukan di waktu
lampau atau kebiasaan yang terjadi di waktu lampau. Berikut rumus simple past tense:

1. Nominal simple past tense


Pada kalimat nominal, bagian predicate akan diisi dengan to be “was” untuk subjek tunggal
dan “were” untuk subjek jamak.

Rumus Nominal Simple Past tense


Positive (+) Subject + to be (was / were) + complement
Negative ( - ) Subject + to be (was / were) not + complement
Interrogative (?) To be (was / were) + subject + complement

Contoh:
 He was a teacher  They were rich
 He was not a teacher  They were not rich
 Was he a teacher?  Were they rich?

2. Verbal simple past tense


Pada kalimat verbal simple past tense, bagian predicate akan diisi dengan verb 2.

Rumus Verbal Simple Past tense


Positive (+) Subject + verb 2 + complement
Negative ( - ) Subject + did + not + verb 1
Interrogative (?) Did + subject + verb 1

Contoh:
 The nurse went to the hospital yesterday
 The nurse did not go to the hospital yesterday.
 Did the nurse go to the hospital yesterday?

 Exercise 3. Put the verbs in the brackets in the negative past form!

 Exercise 4. Ask question for the underlined words!


1. Pam came home yesterday.
2. We went to the park after school.
3. Carol invited Tom to her birthday party.
4. I spent 200.000 rupiahs on a t-shirt.
5. My brother woke up at 7 a.m.

 Exercise 5. Listen to the song and complete the lyrics with the past tense form of the
verbs in the box below!
