Engineering Design Application

History of Engineering Drawing

Gaspard Monge
 He started as an Engineer in the French
Military
 He devised a system that could be used to
communicate an object to anyone across
the world and called Orthographic
Projection.
Perspective Drawing Technique

• It was invented during the Renaissance

period (1300-1500)
• It is one of the foundations of realism in
art.
Perspective Drawing Technique
The two most characteristic
features of perspective are:
 Objects are smaller as
their distance from the
observer increases.
 Object's dimensions along the line of sight are
shorter than its dimensions across the line of
sight
Descriptive Geometry
 It is the mathematical basis of technical
drawing.
 Study 3D geometry through 2D images.
Orthographic Projection

 It is a means of representing a three-

dimensional object in two dimensions.
 A lens providing an orthographic projection is
known as an (object-space) telecentric lens.
Drafting

 Drafters initially created drawings by hand on a

drafting table referred to as a board.
Computer-Aided Design

 It is the use of computer systems for creation,

modification, and analysis of a design.
 CAD may be used to design curves and figures
in (2D) space; or curves, surfaces, and solids in
(3D) space.
CAD History

 It is attributed to a French engineer, Pierre

Bezier.
 He developed UNISURF, between 1966 and
1968, to ease the design of parts and tools for
the automotive industry.
THE DRAFTER

 Prepares technical drawings and plans used by

production and construction workers
 Fills in technical details using drawings, rough
sketches, specifications, and calculations made
by engineers, surveyors, architects, or scientists
THE DRAFTER

 Uses technical handbooks, tables, calculators,

and computers
 Most often uses computer-aided design and
drafting (CADD) systems to prepare drawings
Other Common Titles

 Draftsperson  Discipline or task

 Design drafter specific titles
 Drafting technician Example:
 Engineering drafter  Civil drafter
 Civil engineering drafter
 CADD operator  Construction drafter
 CADD technician  Civil CADD technician
Drafting Fields

 Specific drafting areas have unique conceptual

and skill characteristics
 Drafters often create a variety of drawings even
though they may be an employ in a certain field,
or focus on a specific product
 Drafters often work with a team, individuals of
the same discipline, and others related to a
specific project
