Bringing Back Antiquities
Reclaiming India’s Cultural Heritage
Over centuries, India has seen countless antiquities, including sculptures, manuscripts, and other cultural
treasures, smuggled out of the country. These antiquities now housed in museums, institutions, and private
collections worldwide, represent invaluable pieces of India’s rich and diverse history.
The Government of India, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has put great impetus
on repatriation of these lost and stolen antiquities and reclaiming the nation’s cultural heritage.
Since 2014, 345 antiquities have returned to India from around the world, of which 281 were returned
from the United States between 2016 and 2023. The return of antiquities by the US side is in keeping
with the larger objective of the two governments to bring their people closer and foster deeper cultural
understanding.
This book catalogues the return of 297 additional pieces of antiquities from the United States, which are
going to be handed over by the United States during Prime Minister’s visit to the United Sates from 21-
23 September 2024. These antiquities, are made of materials like terracotta, stone, ivory, wood, copper,
bronze, iron and span a vast timeline of Indian history from 2000 BCE to the 19th Century.
As you delve into the pages of this book, you will witness the remarkable stories of recovery and the
profound impact these artefacts have on our understanding of history and identity. May this book inspire
continued efforts to protect and preserve cultural heritage worldwide.
