Patient-Cantered Care
Patient-centred care prioritizes the patient's healthcare needs, values, and preferences. It
is a comprehensive approach considering the whole person's emotional, mental, and social well-
being, not just physical health. The strategy aims to personalize care to an individual's
circumstances and involves patients as partners in decision-making, with clear and accurate
information and respect for their values. The result is improved patient satisfaction, adherence to
treatment, and overall health outcomes. (Byrne et al., 2020). Patients who receive patient-centred
care communicate better with their healthcare providers, are more satisfied with their care and
are more likely to adhere to treatment. Additionally, patient-centred care can improve health
Patient-centred care has been around for decades but has recently gained increased
attention. In the late 1990s, the Institute of Medicine (IOM) released a report titled "To Err is
Human: Building a Safer Health System" that called for a shift in healthcare from a disease-
centred model to a patient-centred model (Rodziewicz et al., 2022). The report highlighted the
importance of involving patients in their care, improving communication between patients and
healthcare providers, and reducing errors in healthcare. Since then, various organizations, such as
the Patient-Centered Primary Care Collaborative, have been established to promote patient-
centred care.
Additionally, the Affordable Care Act of 2010 included provisions to promote patient-
centred care, such as the establishment of patient-centred medical homes (PCMHs) and the
requirement that healthcare providers use electronic health records (EHRs) to improve
communication and coordination of care. In terms of statistics, Simpson et al., 2022 show that
3
patients who receive patient-centred care have better health outcomes. A systematic review of
patient-centred care interventions found that they were associated with improved patient
satisfaction, better communication between patients and providers, and increased adherence to
conditions, such as diabetes or heart disease. These conditions require ongoing management and
self-care, and patients engaged in their care are more likely to stick to treatment and have well
health outcomes. Additionally, patient-centred care is essential for individuals with complex
healthcare needs, such as those who are elderly or have multiple comorbidities (Kuipers et al.,
2019). For individuals with chronic health conditions, patient-centred care can help them to
manage their condition more effectively by involving them in the decision-making process and
providing them with the support and information necessarily for making informed choices about
their care.
Furthermore, patient-centred care can help improve communication between patients and
healthcare providers, leading to better health outcomes. For individuals with complex healthcare
needs, patient-centred care can coordinate their care across different healthcare providers and
settings (Kuipers et al., 2019). According to Kuipers et al., this can improve the continuity of
care and ensure that their care is tailored to their needs and preferences. Additionally, patient-
centred care can help improve communication between patients and healthcare providers, leading

patient to achieve the best possible health outcomes. Nurses are responsible for assessing the
patient's needs, providing information and education, and developing a care plan tailored to the
patient's unique circumstances. To deliver patient-centred care, nurses must have strong
communication and interpersonal skills. They must listen actively, respond empathetically, and
provide clear and accurate information. They must also build trust and establish a rapport with
the patient. Nurses are also responsible for coordinating care across different healthcare
providers and settings, which is particularly important for individuals with complex healthcare
needs (Elmhurst University, 2022). This requires strong organizational and leadership skills and

patient-centred care is relevant to nursing practice because it has improved patient satisfaction
and adherence to treatment and health outcomes (Kuipers et al., 2019). By providing patient-

One key recommendation is to provide education and training for healthcare providers on
patient-centred care principles and communication skills. This will equip providers with the
necessary knowledge and skills to prioritize patients' needs, preferences, and values in their care.
Effective communication is crucial in building trust between patients and providers, which is
essential in the patient-centred care model. Furthermore, healthcare providers should implement
electronic health records (EHRs) to improve communication and coordination of care. EHRs
allow for easy and secure sharing of patient information between healthcare providers, leading to
improved quality of care. As well, EHRs allow healthcare providers to access patient
information from different providers and locations, leading to a more coordinated and efficient
care process. Finally, healthcare organizations should provide resources and support for
healthcare providers to help them implement patient-centred care principles in their practice.
This includes offering access to continuing education, mentoring, and other professional

Healthcare organizations should establish standards of practice that promote patient-centred care

an active role in their care and achieve the best possible health outcomes.
