Isnag Tribe Clothings & Adornments

The traditional attire of the Isnag/Isneg tribe reflects their cultural heritage and distinct aesthethic
sensibilities. It serve as a visual presentation of their cultural identity, showcasing intricate designs and
craftmanship that have been passed down through generations.

 Men wear “abag” and badiyu/badio (upper garment).


 Women wear their traditional attire or Liglihi — Aken, Bahakat, Laddu/ong (head scarf), and
Badio.
 Both men and women wear predominantly dark to greyish blue attire — a connection to their
affinity with Apayao River.

Isnag Clothes : Patterns, Colors, Significance

1. Inarigrihi

Most important and highly prize upper garment.

Layers of blue and red fabric tucked into the armhole called pinuntasan that symbolize true Isnag spirit.

It is only worn by affluent Isnag.

1.1. Badiyu/Badio - upper garment

2. Aken

Small Aken is for everyday use, while large Aken is for ceremonial.

3. Laddong (head scarf)

5 Patterns in Isnag’s Aken

1. Baleku or scallop pattern refers to the Sinulung River.


2. Sinabungan symbolizes the flower of the wild rice.
3. Kamammay is the smallest and finest rice variety of Isnag, it celebrates productivity and abundance.

4. Sinan Ahamay or centipede that serves as a protection from bad spirits.

5. Zigzag that represents the mountains of Ngahan. It also shows the flowing rivers or journey of life.

Colors & Geometric Patterns

1. Blue - calmness, tranquility, and harmony


2. Red - represents courage, vitality, and energy. It may symbolize the strength and resilience of the
Isneg people.

3. Black - associated with mystery, the spirit world, and ancestral connections. It holds deep spiritual
significance.

4. White - symbolizes purity, clarity, and ancestral spirits. It represents a connection to the past and the
wisdom of ancestors.

Shapes and patterns represent various aspects of Isneg culture, spirituality, and daily life.

Zigzag - flowing rivers or the journey of life

Circles - unity and interconnectedness

Isneg Adornments

They feature animal motifs, symbolizing their spiritual connection to nature.

Limek (beaded necklace)

Linglingo (beaded bracelet)

Asog (earrings)

Sipattal

– Worn by men, women and sometimes children ; usually reserved for ceremonial occasions.

Two primary elements :

the sipatar, or beaded choker, that is worn around the neck and the bissin, tiered pendants of mother-
of-pearl that hang across the chest.

The material elements of sipattal speak to the adornment’s high status, as each individual component is
comprised of materials with inherent exchange value.

It also be included as part of the payment of tadug – bride wealth given by the groom’s family to that of
the bride to compensate for the loss of her contribution to the family.
