SOFTBALL
WHAT IS SOFTBALL?
is an outdoor game that
demands robust physical
strength and stamina in
addition to good strategy.

The ball used in this game is

larger.

It is also known as kitten ball,

mush ball, softbund ball.
HISTORY
OF
SOFTBALL
The first ever softball match was
played in Chicago, Illinois. It was
played on a thanksgiving day in
the second last decade of
nineteenth century around 1887.

Main purpose is to give thanks to

the almighty for the blessings of
the harvest and prosperity.
George Hancock is credited
with inventing this sport and
designing the ball and the
bat.

This sport was initially called

as indoor baseball. But
virtually the game was moved
outside.
Lewis Robersrin organized
outdoor softball games in
Minneapolis and called the
game kitten ball.

As an exercise for the fire

fighters
The name softball was given
to this sport in the year 1926.
It was coined by Walter
Hankanson.

This 16-inch ball is called as

mush ball. Fast pitch softball
has gained popularity more
than slow-pitch softball
matches in the 40’s.
TWO TYPES OF
SOFTBALL
EQUIPMENTS
OF
SOFTBALL
BALL
In the official game, the actual
size of the softball is 12 inches
or 30.5 centimeters in
circumferences. Although it was
named softball, the actual ball
is not really soft.
BAT
The bat may be made of
aluminum, wood,or carbon fiber.
The size of the bat is 34 inches
long and 2.25 inches in diameter
and weighs not more than 1.2 kg.
Player of softball prefer small
barrel bat which is lighter and has
more room for swinging.
GLOVES/MITTS
The gloves are made up of
leather or material similar
to it. The softball glove is
bigger than that of the
baseball glove which is 14
inches.
BATTING GLOVES
Batting gloves have gained
lots of popularity in softball in
recent years. Up until the mid
1950's. Nowadays, a majority
of softball players wear
batting gloves to protect their
hands when hitting.
CATCHER'S GLOVE
A catcher's glove is a wider,
more padded glove. The
glove is rounder than
normal gloves and is
specially designed to
withstand multiple high
speed pitches.
BATTING HELMET
Batting helmet are one
of the few necessary
pieces of protective
equipment in softball.
When hitting, a batting
helmet is required.
CLEATS
Also called "spikes". They
are with squared pikes in
the bottom. These shoes
gives you better grip in the
dirt and grass. The spikes
can be made metal or
plastic.
PROTECTIVE
GEARS
The helmet has two ear flaps to
protect the ears and worn by all
players in the field. Face mask,
throat protector, shin guard,
and body protectors are gears
used or worn by the catcher.
SKILLS USED
IN
SOFTBALL
1. THROWING
The act of passing the ball to a
teammate. There are two types
of throwing:

a. Underhand
throwing is the act of
passing the ball below the
shoulder level.
b. Overhead
throwing is the act of
passing the ball by
swinging your arm just
above the shoulder
2. FIELDING

- Defensive act of
catching the ball after a
successful hit was made.
It could be a ground or a
fly ball.
3. BATTING
- The act of hitting the
ball by swinging the
arms backward and
hitting the incoming ball
by swinging it again
toward the area of the
ball origin
4. CATCHING
- The process of
receiving the ball from a
pitch or throw. Good
coordination is
necessary for this kind of
skill.
DIFFERENT POSITIONS
OF THE PLAYERS IN
SOFTBALL
INFIELDERS
are players who are inside
in the diamond and play
any one of these four
positions. Each of these
positions have their own
unique set of
responsibilities which favor
particular skills.
1. PITCHER

the ball toward a
batter which is
positioned at the
middle of the
diamond

(DEFENSIVE)
SOFTBALL
OFFICIALS
HOME PLATE UMPIRE
• They must call every pitch a ball, strike or foul
within a strike zone which varies from batter
to batter. This requires the umpire to pay
close attention to each pitch and the number
of balls and strikes with each batter.

• As well as how the pitcher pitches the ball

and whether he is doing it legally or not.

• The home plate umpire must also call base

runners out or safe at home plate, which are
also often game-deciding calls.
BASE UMPIRE
• Umpires are also assigned to watch each
base, from first to third. These umpires
have a number of duties each inning,
which entail watching each base and
deciding whether runners are safe or out
on plays at that base.

• These umpires must also watch

baserunners who are stealing bases and
determine if they were tagged out,
picked off, or if they made it to the bag
before the tag was made.
LINE UMPIRE
• While these umpires are not always
needed in smaller league games, they
are often hired to simply watch balls hit
down the lines of the outfield and decide
whether the ball is fair or foul.

• If the ball lands on or inside the white

line, it is fair. If it lands outside the white
line, it is foul.

• These umpires also have the final call on

whether home runs bounced off the top
of the wall are fair or not.
HOW TO PLAY
SOFTBALL?
• Softball played by two
teams of 9 players each
who try to score more runs
than their opponent by
rounding the bases and
crossing home plate as
many times as possible.
• The batting team stays up
to bat until the fielding
team puts out 3 batters.
STARTING PLAY:
- The visiting team bats first
while the home team starts out
in the field on defense.

- Each fielder line up in one of

the 9 fielding positions. The first
batter steps into the batter’s
box and prepares to hit the
pitch.
WAYS TO GET
BATTER/BASE
RUNNERS OUT
1. STRIKE OUT - Missing the pitch
three times

2. FLY OUT - If the fielders catch

the ball in the air.
3. FORCE OUT/FORCE PLAY -
Made when a baserunner is
forced to leave his base when
the batter becomes a
baserunner himself and the
fielder touches a base while
holding the ball before the
baserunner reaches it.
4. TAG OUT /TAG PLAY - is a
play in which a baserunner is
out because a fielder touches
him with the ball or with the
hand or glove holding the
ball, while the ball is live and
the runner is in jeopardy of
being put out – usually when
he is not touching a base.
HOW TO SCORE
IN SOFTBALL?
In softball match have 7 innings

Each innings divided into two halves:

the top and bottom half.
If the fielding team (defense) manage
to put out 3 batters/baserunners.
Automatically, each team will swap the

STRIKE ZONE:
defined as the volume of space
above home plate and between
the batter's knees and the
midpoint of their torso. Whether
a pitch passes through the zone is
