BOLTS (CLASS 10.9) AND NUTS (CLASS 10)
FOR TUBE MILLS
SCOPE: This standard gives requirements of material, quality
checks, heat treatment, chemical composition and mechanical
properties for bolts and nuts for tube mill applications.
REQUIREMENTS FOR BOLTS:
Bolts shall be manufactured with forged steel (reduction ratio shall be
minimum 4 for Ingots. Reduction ratio for Billets and booms shall be
minimum 1.5. If raw material is rolled bars supplier has to show
evidence that the raw material used is already having a reduction ratio
of 4) and supplied as per drawing, Purchase Order and this
Specification. Threads shall be formed by rolling.
APPLICATION:
These bolts are used between cheek to trunnion, cheek to gear and
shell to shell flange joints.
CHEMICAL COMPOSITION:
Chemical composition of the materials used for manufacture of these
bolts shall be as per table 2 of 1S1367 part 3 applicable for property
class 10.9.
MECHANICAL PROPERTIES:
Mechanical properties shall be as per table 3 of IS1367 part 3
applicable to property class 10.9
Impact strength shall be 40 KCU J/cm? average minimum.5.0

HEAT TREATMENT:
Material shall be heat treated suitably, to achieve the mechanical
properties required before thread rolling operation.
TESTING AND INSPECTION:
Dimensional inspection:
All the bolts shall be subjected to dimensional inspection as per
applicable drawings.
CHEMICAL COMPOSITION:
One sample per melt shall be subjected to the chemical composition
analysis.
MECHANICAL TESTING:
a. Hardness testing: All the bolts shall be subjected to hardness
testing to conform to 10.9 grade applicable requirement as given in
table 3 of IS1367 part 3.
b. Tensile testing: One sofiest and one hardest sample of bolt per
melt, per heat treatment batch shall be subjected to tensile testing,
yield strength & percentage elongation as per 8.1 (program A) and
proof loading test as per 8.4 (program B) of 181367 part 3.
c. Impact testing: As per 8.6 (program A). However acceptance
norms shall be 40 KCU J / cm? average minimum.
NON-DESTRUCTIVE TESTING:
All bolts shall subjected to Magnetic Particle Inspection or DP test before
black oxidizing or phosphating operation. No cracks are permitted.
METALLOGRAPHY:
One sample from a bolt (per melt per heat treatment batch) with
threads ( minimum 3 threads) shall be tested for microstructure to
ascertain the plastic deformation during thread rolling operation.
If any of the results of the above tests do not conform to the specified
acceptable norms, the entire lot stands rejected.7.0

TEST CERTIFICATES:
The following test certificates shall be submitted along with supply.
a. Raw material test certificates from Steel mills for chemical
composition.
b. Test certificates indicating results of chemical composition and
mechanical testing, hardness test results of each bolt and non-
destructive tests as applicable to this specification requirements.
c Dimensional inspection reports.
da. Final heat treatment charts if applicable.
MARKING:
Supplier identification and grade shall be marked on the head of the bolt.
Each bolt shall be punched with serial number and corresponding bolt
hardness shall be given in the test certificate.
REQUIREMENT FOR NUTS
Nuts shall be as per applicable drawing and purchase order.
APPLICATION:
These nuts are used with the bolts between cheek to trunnion, cheek to
gear and shell to shell joints.
CHEMICAL COMPOSITION:
Chemical composition of the materials used for manufacturing these nuts shall
be as per table 4 of IS1367 part 6 applicable for property class 10.
MECHANICAL PROPERTIES:
Mechanical properties shall be as per table 5 of IS 1367 part 6 applicable to
property class 10.12.0 HEAT TREATMEN’
13.0
Material shall be heat treated suitably, to achieve the mechanical properties
required as per clause 11 of this specification.
TESTING AND INSPECTION:
13.1 Dimensional inspection:
All the nuts shall be subjected to dimensional inspection as per the
applicable drawings.
13.2 Chemical composition:
One sample per melt shall be subjected to the chemical composition
analysis.
13.2. Mechanical testing:
a. Hardness testing: All the nuts shall be subjected to hardness testing
to conform to class 10 applicable requirement as given in table 5 of
1S1367 part 6.
b. Tensile testing: One softest and one hardest sample of nut per melt,
per heat treatment batch shall be subjected to proofing load test under
clause 8.1 of IS1367 part 6.
13.3 Non-destructive testing:
All the nuts shall be subjected to magnetic particle inspection or DP test
before black oxidizing or phosphating operation. No cracks are
permitted.14.0 TEST CERTIFICATES:
The following test certificates shall be submitted along with supply.
a. Raw material test certificates from steel mills for chemical
composition.
b. Test certificates indicating results of chemical composition,
mechanical testing. hardness test results and non-destructive
test as applicable to this specification.
c. Dimensional inspection reports.
d. Final heat treatment charts, if applicable.
15.0 Supplier identification and property class shall be marked as given fig. 4 of
1S1367 part 6.
16.0 PACKING:
