MIDTERM EXAMINATION MODULE


THE TOURISM NETWORK AND SUPPLY COMPONENTS
 Travel industry – According to Gee, Choy and Makens “the composite of organizations, both
private and public that are involved in the development, production and marketing of products
and services to serve the needs of travelers”.
The Tourism Components
a.) The first category – direct providers includes businesses that are associated with travel such
as airlines, hotels, restaurants, ground transportation, travel agencies and retail shops.
b.) The second category – support services, lend support to direct providers.
c.) The third category – developmental organization includes planners, government agencies,
financial institutions, real estate developers and educational and vocational training
institutions.

Five Main Categories of Tourism Supply Components


1.) Natural Resources – These include climate, landforms, terrains, flora, fauna, bodies of water,
beaches, natural beauty and water supply for drinking, sanitation and similar uses.
2.) Infrastructure – This consists of all underground and surface developmental construction such
as water supply systems, sewage disposal systems, gas lines, electrical and communication systems,
drainage systems and other constructed facilities such as highways, airports railroad and similar
tourist service installations.
a.) Water – sufficient quantities of water is essential.
b.) Power – The type of power supplied be compatible with that used by the target markets of the
destination.
c.) Communication – It is necessary that the telephone an telegraph service be available.
d.) Sewage/Drainage – Sewer demand is often placed at 90% of domestic water demand.
e.) Health care – the type of healthcare facilities provided will depend on the number of visitors
expected.
f.) Street. Highways – the availability of first-class roads adds greatly to the accessibility of a region.
Uses of Highways:
 Provide close-up range view of local scenes
 Change the elevation
 Develop viewpoints and overlooks
 Independently align dual-lane highways to fit into the land contour
 Selectively thin trees, to reveal views.
3.) Superstructure – These are the above ground facilities services such as airport buildings,
passenger traffic terminals, hotels, motels, resorts, restaurants and similar structures.
4.) Transportation and transportation equipment – These include items such as ships, airplanes,
trains, buses, limousines, taxis, automobiles and similar passenger transportation facilities.
Problems in Terminal Facilities:
 General – The complete lack of coordination among the three modes of air, rail and bus.
Suggestions to Terminals and Ground Facilities:
a.) Full information about facilities, terminal locations, and local transportation at destination.
b.) A security system should be provided to prevent theft.
c.) The information system should provide data on connecting rail and bus service.
d.) A system of standard signs and symbols should be developed.
e.) Rapid updated arrival and departure information should be available on posted information
boards.
f.) Personnel should always be available to assists passengers especially the aged, handicapped.
g.) Complete information should be provided on the location, fares, schedules and routes of local
transportation services.
h.) City maps should be made available to tourists.

Various Forms of Transportation:


 Land Travel – These includes taxi and limousine service.
 Air Travel – Porter services important to air terminals.
5.) Hospitality resources – These include the welcoming spirt of tourist’s business employees,
attitudes of the residents towards visitors and other manifestations of warmth and friendliness.

c.) Attitudes toward the Tourism Industry

Basic Standard Requirements for Restaurants
 The façade and architectural features of the building shall be appropriately designed.
 The dining room shall be adequate in size with sufficient and well-maintained furniture.
 Adequate number of well-trained and well-groomed, experienced, efficient and courteous
staff shall be employed.
