1. A background statement about
the topic:

A university is an institution of
higher education where students
pursue/get/gain undergraduate and
postgraduate degree in various
fields of study.
Vocabulary
• Higher education – tertiary education
• Pursue (v) VS pursuit (n) – mendapat
• Stepping stone
• It has become a traditional belief (n) that a university
degree is a stepping stone to succeed / to achieve
success/ to become a successful person.
• It is not uncommon / common to find that parents would
push or encourage their children to pursue a university
degree/ qualification in order to become a successful
person.
2. A more detailed background statement
about the topic:
•Many people still question whether a university
degree is necessary to succeed and it has
become a hotly debated issue among people
especially parents nowadays.
•It is undeniable that a degree offers numerous
advantages. However, there are instances where
success can be achieved (P4) without a
university degree.

In this essay, I will explore the opinions

Clearly, a university degree is vital for an individual

field of study.

vocational training is no doubt a way to achieve
success.

Vocational programs which do not require a university
degree emphasize specific careers such as repair,
culinary arts and automotive repair. The cost of
vocational training is often lower compared to a four-
year university degree.

Vocational training equips students with practical skills
which make them ready to various job opportunity and
potential for success.
Paragraph 4: concluding paragraph
The last paragraph of your discursive essay should
contain a summary of both previous opinions, be
ended with the writer’s opinion.
The last paragraph should be structured
like this:

To sum up, it is evident/obvious/apparent that there are many
ways to achieve success, be it a university degree or
vocational training.
2. The writer’s opinion: In my opinion, a university degree may
be vital in certain scenarios. However, success can also be
achieved through alternative paths that emphasize practical
skills, entrepreneur mindset and relevant experience.
3. Suggestion and Conclusion:
To conclude, we must remain open to one’s choice in life for
success. Ultimately, the definition of success is subjective
can be realised through diverse avenues, whether with or
without a university degree.
