a.) HISTORY
-Boxing is a sport in which two participants of similar weight fight each other with their
fists in gloves in a series of one-to-three-minute intervals called rounds. The bout takes
place in a roped area called a ring.
- The earliest visual evidence of any type of boxing is from Egypt and Sumer, both from
the third millennia, and can be seen in Sumerian carvings from the third and second
millennia BC. The earliest evidence of boxing rules dates back to Ancient Greece, where
boxing was established as an Olympic game in 688 BC.
- Theterm “boxing” is derived from the term “pugilism” from the ancient Latin word,
“pugil” meaning “a boxer”. The pugilism meaning is related to the Latin “pugnus”
meaning “fist” and derived from the Greek word “pyx” meaning “with clenched fist”.
- James Figg ,who socialized with the Prince of Wales and other members of the royal
family, died in 1740, leaving a wife and several children. Although some considered him
a better swordsman than boxer, Figg is called “The Father of Boxing” for his role in
popularizing and teaching the sport.
The importance of a good stance cannot be stressed enough. A good stance provides
balance, and is a key to both attacking and defensive techniques.Boxers should be able to
throw a punch without losing their balance. Being off balance allows an opponent to get
in with their own blows.
Boxing footwork
Good footwork is important to enable the boxer to defend or attack from a balanced
position. The key to good footwork is speed, and this can be enhanced by improving
fitness, with particular attention to the legs. One good activity for improving fitness, used
by many boxers, is skipping.
Punching
The jab- This is the simplest but most-used punch in boxing, and likely to be the
first punch any beginner would learn. The jab can be used both for attack or
defense, and is useful to keep the opponent at bay to set up bigger blows.
A ‘straight right’ -This is the most powerful and damaging punch, but it may
leave the boxer open to a counterattack if it fails to connect. It is best used in a
combination of punches, usually after the opponent’s defense has opened up after
being hit with a good left jab.
A ‘straight left’- This is a good way of keeping an opponent on the back foot.
Hook-The hook comes from the side so can catch the opponent unaware as it
initially comes from out of their vision. The hook requires the boxer to arch and
turn their body into a punch. It can be made with either the left or right arm.

1. The referee- is the chief official of the contest and has general supervision over the bout.
2. Before the contest, the referee shall ask the name of each contestant's chief second and
shall hold that chief second responsible for the conduct of the contestant during the
contest.
2. Boxing Judge- is responsible for judging the results of a boxing match, with as many as
three judges typically present at ringside to score the bout and assign points to the boxers,
based on punches that connect, defense, knockdowns, and other, more subjective,
measures.
3. All boxing contests will have either 3 or 5 judges at ringside and one referee in the ring
who will maintain control of the bout at all stages.
4. A contest will not proceed unless there is a qualified physician at ringside to observe.
5. Manual scoring remains an accepted judging method, however, is seen much less
frequently.
6. Decisions by judges are sometimes cause for controversy, however, Officials observe the
rules in awarding points and the casual observer may not have the benefit of this
knowledge.
