Ans:-Those sources of energy which are not based on the burning splitting of atoms of nuclear fuels are called
alternative sources of energy. Eg:-Hydroelectric energy, wind energy, solar energy.
Q16.What is a hydro power plant? How electricity is generated in this plant?
Ans:-A power plant that produces electricity by using flowing water to rotate turbine is called hydro power plant.
Rain flowing on the high ground in hilly areas flows down as rivers. In order to produce electricity, a high rise dam is
built to stop the flowing river water. Due to this a large lake or reservoir builds up behind the dam. In this way the
kinetic energy of the flown river water is converted in to the potential energy of water store behind the dam.
The sluice gates at half of the height of dam are depend to allow some of the stored water to
escape. This water is taken through pipe to the Turbine T installed at the bottom of the dam. Since the water falls
down through a large height from the dam.It flows very fast.A high pressure jet of fast flowing water pushes on the
blades of turbine with a great force and makes the turbine rotates rapidly. The turbine is connected to generator
through its shaft S.When the turbine rotates, its shaft also rotates and drives the generator. The generator produces
electricity.
Q17.State few advantages and disadvantages of generating hydro-electricity.
Ans:-Advantages:-
1.The generation of electricity from flowing water does not produce any environmental pollution.

3.The construction of dams on rivers help in constructing floods and irrigation.
Disadvantages:-
1.Large areas of agriculture land ,a vast variety of flora and fauna as well as human settlement get submerged in the
water of reservoir formed by the dam.
2.Large ecosystem are destroyed when land is submerged under the water of reservoir of a dam.
3.Due to the construction of dam on the river the fish in the down stream area not get sufficient nutrient
due to which the production of fish decreases rapidly.

2.The use of solar cooker does not produce smoke due to which it does not pollute air.
3.When food is cooked in solar cooker, its nutrient do not get destroyed. This is because in a solar cooker, food is
cooked at a comparatively lower temperature.
4.In a solar cooker, up to food items can be cooked at the same time.
Disadvantages:-
1.The solar cooker cannot be used to cook food during night because sun here is not available at that time.
2.If the day sky is covered with clouds even then solar cooker cannot be used to cook food.

Ans:-A solar cell is a device which converts solar energy directly into electricity.
Q21.What kind of mirror would be best suited for use in a solar cooker and why?
Ans:-In order to achieve higher temperature required for baking and frying ,spherical reflector type solar
cooker, having a concave reflector,is used. When a concave mirror reflector is attached to a solar cooker it covers a
large amount of sun’s heat rays as its focus due to which a high temperature is produced in the focus area. Thus a
concave mirror reflector is best suited for use in a solar cooker.
Q22.What are biomass?
Ans:- The dead parts of plants and trees, and the waste materials of animals are called biomass.
Q23.Give reasons-
Charcoal is better fuel than wood.
Ans:Charcoal is better fuel than wood because:-
1.Charcoal has a higher calorific value than wood.

3.Charcoal is a compact fuel which is easy to handle and convenient to use.
Q24.Describe a bio gas plant.
Ans:-A biogas plant is consists of a well-shaped underground tank called digester which is made of bricks and has a
done dome shaped roof, also made of cement and bricks. There is a gas outlet at the top of the dome having a valve
.On the left side of the digester tank is a sloping in let chamber and on the right side is a rectangular outlet chamber
,both made of bricks .The inlet chamber is for introducing fresh dung slurry. The outlet chamber is connected to a
mixing tank while the outlet chamber is connected to the overflow tank .
Cow dung and water are mixed in equal proportions in the mixing tank to prepare the
slurry. This slurry of dung water is fed into the digestor tank through the inlet chamber. It takes 50 to 60 days for
new gas plant to become operative. During this period, the cow dung undergoes degradation by anaerobic bacteria
in the presence of water with the gradual evolution of bio gas. The biogas starts collecting in the dome.
