instances of the new
lesson
It was a dark and stormy night. I sat alone in the old, dilapidated
house staring out the window. The sky was black, the wind was loud,
and the rain slammed against the broken windowpane. I shut my
eyes, remembering my earlier visit, and I felt so embarrassed and
angry. When I opened them, the lightning bolt flashed and lit up the
room once more. I had to get out of the house, I had to hide. No one
could know my horrible mistake. I opened the door, took a deep
breath, and ran into the cold and rain.

Questions:

1.What feelings did you have while listening to the previous story?

2. What made you feel this way?

3.What words did you hear that helped create this feeling?

The activities you have done and the questions you have answered
has something to do with our lesson for today.

Varied literary pieces exist in the world, having different genre, tone,
type, etc. but they all have one thing in common, that is purpose.
Writers write for many different reasons. And those reasons are what
we call the "author's purpose" that coincides with the tone, mood and
technique as well.

AUTHOR

It is broadly defined as “the person who originated or gave existence

to anything” and whose authorship determines responsibility for what
was created.

Narrowly defined, an author is the originator of any written work

and can also be decribed as a writer

MOOD
Is what the reader feels while reading a scene or story.

The mood is developed through the setting, tone and diction.

Mood is different from tone in a way that, mood is the emotion that
the author wanted the readers to feel while reading the text.

It is not the reader’s emotion, but the atmosphere (the vibe) of a

scene or story. It’s what the reader reads or feels or notices.

Some positive moods are cheerful, calm, dreamy, excited and happy.
While being angry, depressed, gloomy, envious and frustrated are
negative moods.

Example: The author writes a horror story utilizing serious and

sinister tone. The tone helps to create a scary atmosphere and a
nervous and frightened mood for the readers.

List of moods (atmosphere)

o Suspense
o Lonely
o Happy
o Angry
o Anxious
o Tense
o Suspicious
o Excited
o Depressed
o Scared
o Disgusted

TONE
Is the attitude of the narrator or viewpoint character toward story
events and other characters.

It is expressed through the words of the author. As a reader, you may

look at the choice of words and utilization of words of the author to
identify the tone.

The tone of the author can either be objective or subjective.

It is achieved through word choice (diction), sentence construction

and word order (syntax), and by what the viewpoint character focuses
on.

According to Elin (2010), as a reader, you must read between the

lines to feel the attitude of the author and identify the tone.

Example: This house is shabby, but since we grow up here, it has a

special place in my heart.

The tone is sentimental because of the phrase "it has a special place
in my heart" which expresses warmhearted emotions.

List of Tone words

● Accusatory: charging of wrongdoing.

● Biter exhibiting strong animosity as a result of pain or grief.

● Critical: finding fault

● Earnest: intense, a sincere state of mind

● Intimate: very familiar

● Matter-of-fact: accepting conditions; not fanciful or

emotional
● Optimistic: hopeful, caustic

● Sincere: without deceit or pretense; genuine

● Solemn deeply earnest, tending toward sad reflection

The way that someone voices a statement or the words an author
chooses influences the tone.

Example:

"Don't use that tone of voice with me!"

"What are your plans for today," my mother asked.

"I'm going to the store, "Mark responded.

"I'm going to the store!" Mark responded.

Remember. Author uses tone to create a mood.

Technique

Is the author's syntax, word choice and tone. Techniques varies from
one author to another. There are four basic literary styles used in
writing: expository or argumentative, descriptive, persuasive, and
narrative.

Expository or argumentative - the focus is to tell the readers about a

specific subject or topic but the author leaves out his own opinions
about the topic.

Descriptive -the focus is to describe an event, a character, or a place

in detail. The author usually incorporates sensory details in the text.

Persuasive - the author gives reasons and justifications to make the

readers believe his point of view. The aim of this text is to persuade
or convince the readers.

Narrative - the author narrates a story like in novels, short stories,

biographies and poetries.

Purpose - is the reason why the author writes the text. The main
purposes of writing a text are to inform, to entertain and to persuade.
To inform the author gives out information through the text by
providing facts and explanation to the readers.

To entertain the author gives delight or amusement to the readers

through writing the text.

To persuade the author convinces the readers to agree to his/her point

of view. Also, the author may give facts to prove a point.

Example: People who are not wearing face masks should be arrested
by the authorities. (The purpose is to persuade.)

"A SILVER LINING"

By Vaamika from India | International Relations (2nd Year)

Many people's lives have been affected by the COVID-19 outbreak

and despite this, the online classes for spring semester at Tokyo
International University were actually a silver lining during this
difficult time. Personally, with the lockdown and the occupational
problems facing the people in my country, online classes helped me
to study efficiently and further help my family during the crisis by
making them not worry about missing classes or my safety being
endangered while having to travel. The online classes were also a
great experience, because the teachers were fully prepared with great
presentation slides, quizzes, and worksheets, and also helped students
to socialize by creating breakout rooms for group work on Zoom.

Further, the Japanese government provided 100,000 yen to all its

citizens and the international students to help us in this pandemic
situation. Along with this, JASSO also provided support cash money
of 100,000 yen to selected students and it has helped various students
overcome their financial problems. Last thing that I would especially
like to mention is the provision of storage room provided by TIU to
help students stuck in their home country to move out of the
dormitory and therefore, store their luggage in a room till the time
they return due to the inability of students to find an apartment at
Japan from their home country.

Hence, overall, I feel that TIU has really helped it's International
students throughout this pandemic situation and is still helping.
Hoping that this COVID-19 situation can be curbed as soon as
possible!!
