ELECTROMAGNETISM
What is an Electromagnet
Objective:
To construct a simple electromagnet and investigate how varying the
number of turns of wire and the voltage affects its magnetic strength.
Materials Needed:
1. Copper wire (insulated, about 22-26 gauge)
2. Iron nail (3-5 inches long)
3. Battery (1.5V or 9V, depending on availability)
4. Battery holder (optional for safety)
5. Switch (optional, for control)
6. Paper clips or small metal objects (to test magnet strength)
7. Multimeter (to measure voltage and current)
8. Ruler (for measuring wire length)
9. Insulating tape (to secure connections)
10.Notebook (for recording observations)
Procedure:
Data Collection:
2. Discuss Findings:
o Analyze how the strength of the electromagnet changes with
the number of turns and voltage. Discuss the underlying
physics, such as how increasing turns creates a stronger
magnetic field and how voltage influences the current.
Conclusion:
Summarize your findings. Discuss the implications of your results and
how this project demonstrates the principles of electromagnetism. You
might also consider real-world applications of electromagnets, such as in
electric motors or magnetic levitation.
Safety Considerations:
• Ensure that the wire does not overheat by keeping the experiments
short. Disconnect the battery when not in use.
• Handle all materials with care, especially sharp wire ends.
