In the SAP System there are structures that represent a legal and/or organizational view of a
company. They allow you to define the structure of your company according to your business
processes.
...
SAP AG 1999
The material master contains information on all the materials that a company designs, purchases,
manufactures, stores, and sells.
It is the central source of material specific data. It is used by all application components in SAP
Logistics.
The material can be a finished product (material or article), a semi-finished product (sub-assembly),
or a raw material (purchased part).

SAP AG 1999
Some material data is valid for all organizational levels, whereas other material data is only valid for
specific levels. The material master has a hierarchical structure that reflects the structure of a
company. This allows you to manage material data centrally without having to store data
redundantly.
Data on client level
general material data that is valid for the entire enterprise are stored at the client level. These can
be such as material group, base unit of measure, material descriptions, general technical data, and
conversion factors for alternative units of measure.
Data on plant level
On plant level, you store all the data that is valid in a plant and all the storage locations in it, such
as MRP data and forecast data. This includes MRP data and forecast data.
Data on storage location level
On storage location level, you store all the data that is valid for one storage location.
Such as storage location stock.
SAP AG 1999
You create a record in the material master for each material that your company uses. Each material
master record has its own unique material number.
The type of material number assignment can be internal or external. You can use User Exits to
change material numbers as you like.
The material type summarizes all materials with the same properties. It controls things such as screen
setup, screen sequence, procurement type pr number assignment
The branch indicates what line of industry is assigned to the material. It also controls screen setup
and screen sequence.
SAP AG 1999
You can assign each material to a material type. Material types allow you to manage different types
of material (for example, raw materials, semi-finished products, and finished products) in a
consistent way, according to their attributes and your company's requirements.
When you create a material master record, the material type you select determines:
The type of material number assignment (internal or external)
The number range from which the material number is assigned
Which screens appear in which order
Which department-specific data you can enter
Whether quantities are updated in the material master record
Whether changes in value are updated in the material stock account
Whether the material is produced in-house or procured externally

SAP AG 1999
The data in a material master record can be divided up according to the different departments or
specialized areas in a company. Each department has its own view of a material master record and is
responsible for department-specific data. This depends on the material type.
Basic data and classification is usually processed centrally by the engineering/design department. It
all depends on how your company is organized. This department may also be responsible for data on
work scheduling, MRP, quality management, and so on.

SAP AG 1999
The material status allows you to control a material in other areas and applications and is defined in
Customizing. You can use the material status to lock a material for use in certain business
transactions in materials management (MM) or production planning (PP).
The material status can be defined plant-dependent ate the basic data level as well as plant-specific
for example at the work scheduling level.
Statuses are outlined in hierarchies. The error message overrides the warning message and the
warning messages overrides "No message".

SAP AG 1999
Set a material status ate client level that blocks maintaining BOMs. In this way no plant BOMs can
be created at plant level with the material independent of the material status.
Set a material status at client level with a warning and at plant level set a status with an error
message allows all other plants to process with a warning, the one plant with an error message cannot
process.

SAP AG 1999
When you configure your system, you can customize the functions for material master records to suit
your company's requirements. You can use either standard subscreens or subscreens that you create
yourself to set up your own screens. You can use either standard subscreens or subscreens that you
create yourself to set up your own screen.

Exercises
You want to construct a new pump and create then two material masters.
These are then used later in a BOM.
1-2 Create another material master after you fell comfortable with the procedure. These
objects are used in the next unit for creating material BOMs.
1-2-1 Create a finished product in plant 1000 with the following data:
Initial screen
Material number: T-F6##
Industry sector: Mechanical engineering
Material type: FERT
Confirm your entires. In the next step you will see a new screen where you
select a materia.l master view:

Classification
Work scheduling (Plant 1000)
You can save your views, organizational levels and plant entry as
defaults. This simplifies your work when you create multiple
material masters of the same material type and views.

The view for work scheduling can be found from the classification
