Exercise 1: Verb Tense Consistency


In personal narratives, it’s essential to maintain consistent verb tenses to avoid confusing the reader.

Instructions: Correct the following sentences to ensure consistent verb tense.

1. Last summer, I was walking in the park when I suddenly heard a loud noise.

2. I visited my old neighborhood last week and remembered how it used to look.

3. Whenever I went there, I was reminded of the change.

Exercise 2: Using Sensory Details


Using vivid, sensory descriptions helps bringing personal narrative to life.

Instructions: Fill in the blanks with descriptive sensory details (sight, sound, smell, taste, or touch).

1. The smell of fresh bread from the bakery I smelled a sweet gourmand.

2. As I touched the surface of the old wooden bench, it felt woody under my fingers.

3. The loud sound of construction disturbed my peaceful walk.

Exercise 3: Show, Don’t Tell


One of the key aspects of narrative writing is showing emotions rather than just telling them.

Instructions: Rewrite the following sentences to show rather than tell the emotion.

1. I was excited when I heard the news. I had goosebumps and my heart started racing when
Iheard the news

2. I felt sad when I left the house for the last time. Tears started running down my face when I
left the house for the last time.

3. I was angry at the changes in my neighbourhood. I turned red and grittered my teeth,when I
find out about the changes in my neighbourhood.

Exercise 4: Crafting a Strong Thesis


In personal narratives, the thesis summarizes the lesson learned or the significance of the
experience.

Instructions: Based on the following personal narrative topics, create a thesis statement.

1. A time you felt out of place in a familiar environment.

The time I realized I wasn’t in my environment and I needed to get out of this one.

2. Moving to a new city for the first time.

The time nostalgia started invading my heart, When I Quit the place I used to call home and
was raised in.

3. Learning an unexpected lesson from a family member.


Being told something that hit me straight in the heart from my family.

Exercise 5: Identifying Reflective Sentences


Reflection is essential in personal narratives, it needs to be obvious that you’ve learned you’re your
experiences.

Instructions: Read the following sentences and identify which one includes reflection.

1. The park I used to visit as a child is now gone, replaced by new developments.

2. The loss of the park made me realize how much I relied on it for comfort during difficult
times.

3. I used to play in the park with my friends every weekend.
