ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS


1. Make a web chart on the role of bandagan.
(1) Rather than appointing aristocrats, the early Delhi Sultans, especially Iltutmish,
favoured their special slaves.

(3) He chose to pay his soldiers salaries in cash rather than iqtas.
(4) Prices were carefully surveyed by officers, and merchants who did not sell at the
prescribed rates were punished.

3. Elaborate on the authors of tawarikh in four points.


(1) The authors of tawarikh were learned men: secretaries, administrators, poets and
Courtiers.
(2) They both recounted events and advised rulers, governance, emphasizing the
importance of just rule.
(3) The authors of tawarikh lived in cities (mainly Delhi) and hardly ever in villages,
(4) They often wrote their histories for Sultans in the hope of rich rewards.

4. Describe the functioning of muqtis under the Khalji’s and Tughluq’s.


(1) The duty of the Muqtis was to lead military campaigns and maintain law and order in
their iqtas .
(2) The muqtis collected the revenues of their assignments as salary.
(3) They also paid their soldiers from these revenues.
(4) The muqti collected only the taxes prescribed by the state and that he kept the
required number of soldiers.

5. List the three types of taxes collected during Alauddin Khalji’s reign.
There were three types of taxes:
(1) On cultivation called Kharaj and amounting to about 50 % of the peasant’s produce.
(2) On cattle
(3) On houses

6. Describe the land revenue policy of Alauddin Khalji.
(1) Under Alauddin Khalji the state brough the assessment and collection of land
revenue under its own control.
(2) The rights of the local chieftains to levy taxes were cancelled and they were also
forced to pay taxes.
(3) The Sultan’s administrators measured the land and kept careful accounts.
(4) The old chieftains and land lords served the sultanate as revenue collectors and
Assessors.

7. ‘The circle of justice described the relationship between the king and his subjects’.
Give your comments on the statement.
(1) A king cannot survive without soldiers.
(2) Salaries come from the revenue collected from peasants.
(3) But peasants can pay revenue only when they are prosperous and happy.
(4) This happens when the king promotes justice and honest governance.
