    CONTEMPORARY MUSIC

     According to National Artist Ramon Santos, PhD, “contemporary music in the Philippines
    refers to compositions that have adopted ideas and elements from 20 th century art music in
    the west, as well as the latest trends and musical styles in the entertainment industry.”

     Music is beyond words, it has the power to speak to people’s mind, heart, and soul. It can
    affect the mood, way of thinking and even character and disposition of people listening to it.
     Music composition is a little bit complex for it involves mastery and skill to produce a
    melody. Some musician developed music through experimentation and combination of
    instruments.
    FAMOUS CONTEMPORARY MUSIC COMPOSERS

    1. LUCIO SAN PEDRO


     Known as “romantic nationalist”
     Composer of “Sa Ugoy ng Duyan”
     Recipient of National Artist for Music in 1991
    2. ROSENDO SANTOS JR.
     A UNESCO scholar, he was awarded the “Philippine Composer of the Century after
    receiving the “Composer of the Year Award” in Manila in 1956 and 1957.
     He has more than 1,000 musical compositions in the library of the University of the
    Philippines.
     “Melinda’s Masquerade” was his last musical work and ballet composition.
    3. ALFREDO BUENAVENTURA
     His compositions are based on Filipino heroes, legends, and epics.
     Some of his major works includes symphonies such as Dakilang Lahi (1971),
    Gomburza (1981), and Rizal, the Great Malayan Antagonist (1990)
     He was twice an awardee of the Republic Cultural Heritage Award and the
    Outstanding Filipino Award (TOFIL) for Music in 1995.
    4. CIPRIANO “RYAN” CAYABYAB
     “albumOne” one of his memorable recording, where he personally sang the
    unaccompanied songs on different tracks to produce 16 voices
     Among his numerous compositions are the award-winning Kay Ganda ng Ating
    Musika (1978), as well as the modern zarzuela Alikabok (2003)

    FAMOUS CONTEMPORARY OPM SINGERS

    1. FREDDIE AGUILAR – famous for his song “Anak” that had been popular worldwide. This song
    is about a son who goes astray as he grows up.
    2. GARY VALENCIANO – known for his ala Michael Jackson moves and religious songs.
    3. SHARON CUNETA – a very well-known superstar and a love song singer. She received many
    awards in music and in acting fields.
    4. MIKE HANOPOL – a recording artist, guitarist, and a singer. Some of his famous songs were
    “Katawan” and “Laki sa Layaw”.
    5. KUH LEDESMA – is a famous singer from Bacolod City. Some of her famous songs are
    “Bulaklak”; “Till I Meet You”, and “Sino ang Baliw”.
