Activity Title : Rewriting the Standard Form of a Linear Function into Slope-Intercept Form
Learning Competency : The learner writes the linear equation Ax + By = C in the form y= mx+b and vice
versa. M8AL-If-1
Learning Target : Write the linear equation Ax + By = C in the form y= mx+b and vice versa.
Reference : Advanced Algebra, Trigonometry and Statistics
Author – Soledad Jose-Dilao, et al. Pages 31-33
A linear equation can be described in a standard form ax + by = c where A, B and C are real
numbers or in a slope-intercept form y = mx + b where m and b are also real numbers. Any linear equation can
be transformed or rewritten into a slope-intercept form y = mx + b where m is the slope and b is the y-intercept.
To transform f(x) = mx + b, it is important to recall the properties of equality.
Addition Property of Equality (APE):
If the same number or terms is added to the left and right members of an equation, the sums are equal.
Example: If a = b, then a + c = b + c.
Multiplication Property of Equality (MPE):
If the same number or terms is multiplied to the left and members of an equation, the products are equal.
Example: If a = b, then ac = bc.
Division Property of Equality (DPE):
If the same number is divided to the left and right members of an equation, the quotients are equal. Example:

If a = b, then = .

The slope-intercept form of a linear function y = mx + b can also be transformed to a linear function
Ax + By = C, where A, B and C are real numbers. To transform y= m x + b into Ax + By = C transfer the terms from
one side to another to combine similar terms. It is clearly emphasized that the x and y terms are written at the
left side of an equation while the constant term are written at the right side of an equation.
Examples:
1.) Rewrite 2x + y = – 6 in the form y = mx + b
Solution:
2x + y = – 6 Steps:
2x + -2x + y = -2x - 6 Add -2x to both sides of the equation.(APE)
y = -2x – 6 So, the equation is now transformed in
y= mx + b or f(x) = mx + b

or f(x) = -2x - 6
2. ) Rewrite f(x) = 3x – 5 the following in the form Ax + By = C.
Solutions: Steps:
y = 3x - 5
-3x + y = 3x + (-3x) – 5 Add -3x to both sides of the equation.(APE)
-3x + y = -5
(-1)(-3x + y) = (-5)(-1) Multiply both sides of the equation by -1
3x – y = 5 to change -3x to positive 3x. (MPE)
Exercises:
A. Rewrite the following in the form y = mx + b
1.) -2x + y = 20 2.) 2y = 4x + 6
B. Write the linear functions in the form Ax + By = C.

3.) y = -4x + 3 4.) y = -3x -

Activity Title : Graphing Linear equation using two points
Learning Competency : The learner graphs a linear equation given (a) any two points; (b) the x– and y –
intercepts; (c) the slope and a point on the line. M8AL-If-2
Learning Target : Draw the graph of linear equation using two points and the x– and y – intercepts
Reference : Mathematics Learner’s Module pp. 187-188
A. Using Two Points
One method of graphing a linear equation is using two points. In Geometry, you learned that two
points determine a line. Since the graph of the linear equation is a line, thus two points are enough to draw a
graph of a linear equation.
Illustrative Example
Graph the function y = 2x + 1.
You may assign any two values for x, say 0 and 1.
By substitution,
y = 2x + 1 y = 2x + 1
y = 2(0) + 1 y = 2(1) + 1
y=0+1 y=2+1
y=1 y=3
If x = 0, then y = 1. Furthermore, if x = 1, then y = 3. So, the ordered pairs are (0, 1) and (1, 3). This means that
the line passes through these points.
After finding the ordered pairs of the two points, plot and connect them. Your output is the graph of the linear
equation.
B. USING THE X– AND Y – INTERCEPTS
The linear equation can be graphed by using x-intercept a and y-intercept b. The x- and y-intercepts of
the line could represent two points, which are (a, 0) and (0, b). Thus, the intercepts are enough to graph the
linear equation.
To graph the equation y = 2x + 1 using this method, you need to solve the x-intercept by letting
y = 0 and the y-intercept by letting x = 0.

Letting y = 0, the equation y = 2x + 1 becomes

0 = 2x + 1 Substitution y-intercept
-2x = 1 Addition Property of Equality
x = -1/2 Multiplication Property of Equality
Letting x = 0, y = 2x + 1 becomes
y = 2(0) + 1 Substitution x-intercept
y = 0 + 1 Simplification
y = 1 Simplification
The x-intercept a is -1/2 while the y-intercept b is 1.
Now, plot the x- and y-intercepts, then connect them.
The x-intercept is the abscissa of the coordinates of the point in which the graph intersects the x-axis.
However, the y-intercept is the ordinate of the coordinates of the point in which the graph intersects the y-
axis
Exercises
A. Graph each linear equation that passes through the given pair of points.
1. (1, 2) and (3, 4) 2. (5, 6) and (0, 11)

B. Graph each linear equation whose x-intercept a and y-intercept b are given below.
1. a = 2 and b = 1 2. a = -2 and b = -7

Activity Title : Graphing Linear equation using slope and one point
Learning Competency : The learner graphs a linear equation given (a) any two points; (b) the x– and y –
intercepts; (c) the slope and a point on the line. M8AL-If-2
Learning Target : Draw the graph of linear equation using slope and one point.
Reference : Mathematics Learner’s Module pp. 189-190
The next method in graphing linear equation is by using the slope and one point. This can be done by
plotting first the given point, then finding the other point using the slope.

The linear equation y = 2x + 1 has a slope of 2 and a point (-2, -3). To find a point from this equation, we may
assign any value for x in the given equation. Let’s say, x = -2. The value of y could be computed in the following
manner:

y = 2x + 1 Given
y = 2(-2) + 1 Substitution
y = -4 + 1 Simplification
y = -3 Simplification

Complete the statement below:

The line passes through the point _____.

The point found above is named A whose coordinates are (-2, -3). Since the slope of the line is 2 which is equal
to 4/2, use the rise of 4 and run of 2 to determine the coordinates of B ( 0, 1) (refer to the graph).

Exercises
Graph the following equations given slope m and a point.
1. m = 3 and (0, -6) 3 m = 1/2 and (0, 4)
2. m = -2 and (2, 4) 4. m = 3/2 and (2, -3)

Activity Title : Trend of the graph of linear equation
Learning Competency : The learner describes the graph of a linear equation in terms of its intercepts and
slope. M8AL-If-3
Learning Target : Describe the graph of linear equation in terms of its intercepts and slope.
Reference : Mathematics Learner’s Module pp. 191

 A basic property of a line, other than vertical line, is that its slope is constant.
 The slope of the horizontal line is zero while that of the vertical line is undefined. Both lines do not
represent linear functions.
 The value of the slope m tells the trend of the graph.

• If m is positive, then the graph is increasing from left to right.

• If m is negative, then the graph is decreasing from left to right.
• If m is zero, then the graph is a horizontal line.
• If m is undefined, then the graph is a vertical line.
Exercises:

Determine whether the graph of the equation is increasing or decreasing.

1. y + 2x = 3
2. 2y – 4x = -10
3. y+ x = 2
4. 5y = x – 2
5. 3x – 8y + 5 = 0
