What will we learn?

• Magnetically coupled circuits (mutual

inductance, transformers).
• Frequency response (Bode plots).
• Laplace transform (circuit analysis).

• Fourier series & Fourier transform (circuit I

analysis).
• Two-port networks (Z, Y, ABCD etc.)
3
Course and Program Outcomes (OBE)
• Course outcomes:
COl: To apply principles of mathematics and engineering sciences on complex circuit
problems involving magnetically coupled circuits, circuit frequency responses and Laplace
transform theory.
CO2: To conduct investigation on complex engineering problems involving magnetically
coupled circuits, circuit frequency responses and Laplace transform theory.
C03: To apply principles of mathematics and engineering sciences on complex circuit
problems utilizing Fourier series, Fourier transform and two-port circuit theory.
C04: To conduct investigation on complex engineering problems utilizing Fourier series,
Fourier transform and two-port circuit theory.

• Program outcomes:
P02: Ability to identify, formulate, research literature and analyze complex engineering
problems reaching substantiated conclusions using first principles of mathematics, natural
sciences and engineering sciences.

The dot convention
• Gives the polarity of the induced voltage.
- Is based on the physical windings of the inductors.

• If a current enters the dotted terminal of a coil, the

reference polarity of the voltage induced in the second
coil is QOsitive at its dotted terminal.
• If a current leaves the dotted terminal of a coil, the
reference polarity of the voltage induced in the second
coil is negative at its dotted terminal.

• The total induced voltage is the sum of the self-

induced voltage and the mutually induced voltage.
