ABSTRACT

The Indian banking sector, a pivotal element of the nation’s economy, has
undergone significant transformation due to technological advancements and enhanced
regulatory oversight by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI). Adopting the CAMEL model a
uniform financial rating system has become instrumental in evaluating the performance
of banks amidst intensifying competition. This study delves into the economic
performance of Union Bank of India (UBI), a government-owned public sector bank,
through the lens of the CAMEL model, which assesses five critical parameters: Capital
Adequacy, Asset Quality, Management Efficiency, Earning Capacity, and Liquidity
Position.

Our analysis reveals that while UBI maintains a robust capital base and liquidity
to support growth, areas require strategic improvement, particularly in Asset Quality and
Management Efficiency. The study suggests that enhancing the bank’s asset quality by
mitigating credit risk and reducing non-performing assets is imperative for profitability
and reputation. Simultaneously, elevating management efficiency can lead to better
operational outcomes and cost optimization.
