Question 1 a–i.
Litter collectors
A Pranjal
I’ve always loved living by the coast, and I’m totally into surfing, so when I realised that more and more
litter was on the shore, I had to do something about it, especially since looking after the environment
means a lot to me. I checked online and found a group that organised ‘Rubbish Days’ where locals meet to
pick up litter around our area, including my favourite beach. I wish everyone looked after their litter so it
wouldn’t go into the sea, but wishing won’t solve anything. I know this issue won’t go away overnight, so
I’ll continue to go to these regular events to pick up litter for my whole life if I have to! I want future
generations to be still surfing here – ideally in clean water that doesn’t have plastic bottles floating around.
B Finn
My friends and I volunteer at least once a month to pick up litter in our town centre. It doesn’t sound like a
fascinating thing to do, but someone has to do it, or rubbish would end up all over the place! I was raised
to recycle whenever possible, so I get irritated if I see anyone leaving things on the ground instead of using
a bin. It seemed like no one in my town was bothered by the litter problem, even though it was getting
worse every year. Then the local council created some clever ads that showed families relaxing in various
spots around town surrounded by rubbish with three simple words: ‘Not my problem’. It worked, and
everyone from kids to senior citizens wanted to get involved in the group. Their support is slowly helping
to transform our local community, but we still need more people to make a real difference. I’m certainly
glad that my town doesn’t look as neglected anymore.
C Amira
I really don’t understand how anyone thinks it’s acceptable to litter. Sadly, there are people in my town
who never seem to use bins, so I volunteer to pick litter up all the time. One of the worst areas was around
all the schools. Then a few weeks ago, an expert began giving talks, so every student in our town knew that
pollution, including trash, damages the environment. Almost immediately, you could see students were
behaving more responsibly because the paths around the school were actually clean – and staying that
way! I was stunned that my classmates were making an effort to either recycle or throw things away in
bins. This just proves to me that people want to look after the environment and are willing to work
together when it’s an important cause.

D Hae-Won
I live in the outskirts of a city, and it’s almost like living in a village because there’s so much green space
here. My family loves hiking, and on our walks we often saw ‘fly tipping’, which is illegally dumping
waste, usually in areas where it wouldn’t get noticed, like in the woods. As it wasn’t a very visible
problem, it just got worse. A few years ago, I began taking photos of it and posting them on social media,
especially on our local member of parliament’s page. Thousands of people were shocked by my posts
and began complaining to the council. This forced them to deal with the huge amounts of waste in our
community. Hundreds of people volunteered to clean it up. In fact, we recently won a community award
because we’re taking pride in keeping our area clean so that everyone can enjoy it.

and you have been asked to write a report.
In your report, explain why students want to be involved in their community, how they think they
benefit from doing this and whether they think there are any negative aspects to it.
