Acknowledgments
I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the staff of the Rev Makhenkesi Stofile
Public Library in Alice for their warm welcome and invaluable support during my
fieldwork. On my first day, I was greeted by Miss Thabisa, one of the librarians, who
provided me with clear instructions regarding my responsibilities and took the time to
show me around the library, ensuring that I felt comfortable in my new environment.
The assistance I received from Miss Thabisa and the other librarians was
instrumental in my rapid learning and understanding of the library's operations.
Additionally, I would like to acknowledge the patrons who visited the library daily;
their presence reinforced the significance of libraries in our communities and
challenged my previous assumptions about the decline in library usage due to digital
resources.
I would also like to extend my heartfelt thanks to Mr. Mbhanda, who generously
shared his knowledge of the library's history, including its establishment, purpose,
and evolution. His insights greatly enriched my experience and understanding of the
vital role that libraries play in society.
Introduction
My name is Chulumanco Ndzwana, and I am currently pursuing a degree in Library
and Information Science at the University of Fort Hare, where I am in my third year of
study. This fieldwork report presents an account of my practical experience at the
Rev. Makhenkesi Stofile Library, where I undertook my fieldwork from July 30, 2024,
to August 30, 2024.
The purpose of this fieldwork was to bridge the gap between theoretical knowledge
acquired in the classroom and the practical skills necessary for effective library
management and information services. The Rev. Makhenkesi Stofile Library,
renowned for its dedication to community service and educational resources,
provided an excellent platform for me to engage with various library functions,
including cataloging, circulation, and user assistance.
The Makhenkesi Stofile Public Library, situated in Alice adjacent to the Alice
Municipality, was established on February 21. Its mission is to ensure free and equal
access to information, resources, and educational opportunities for all members of
the community. Over time, it has transformed into a crucial community center that not
only promotes reading and research but also supports various cultural and
educational initiatives.
The library boasts a diverse collection of more than 30,000 books, periodicals, and
digital resources, including e-books and online databases. It provides a range of
services such as literacy programs, technology training, and community workshops
tailored to different age groups and interests. The library's staff, consisting of trained
librarians and volunteers, is dedicated to improving the user experience through
personalized support and innovative programming.
In recent years, the library has encountered challenges stemming from the rapid
digitalization of information and evolving user expectations. To tackle these
challenges, the library has adopted new technologies and broadened its outreach
efforts to engage a wider audience, particularly underserved populations.
Objectives
I aimed to explore and document the various services provided by the Rev.
Makhenkesi Stofile Public Library, reference services, community programs, and
digital resources.
I wanted to evaluate the level of engagement and satisfaction among library patrons
regarding the services and resources available.
Literature review
1. What are the daily routines and tasks performed by librarians, and how do these
contribute to the overall functioning of the library?
2. How do library policies and procedures influence the delivery of services and
management of library operations?
1. What are the most frequently used services and resources provided by the Rev.
Makhenkesi Stofile Public Library, and how do they meet the needs of diverse user
groups?
1. What factors contribute to user satisfaction with library services, and how can
library staff measure and improve user experience?
2. To what extent do library programs and events (e.g., author talks, children's
storytime) enhance user engagement and community participation?
1. In what ways does the Rev. Makhenkesi Stofile Public Library contribute to literacy
and education initiatives in the community?
2. How does the library foster social cohesion and community engagement through
its programs, services, and partnerships?
Activities performed
Here I was assisting grade 4 learners with their schoolwork (Reference service)
Here I was assisting library users who came to borrow books (Circulation)
1. Reference services
2. Circulation
Circulation is the practice of renting and borrowing library goods like books, DVDs,
and audiobooks to patrons for a certain period of time. Library patrons browse the
shelves or search the catalog to select goods, which they then check out at the
circulation counter with their library cards. Borrowing policies are established by the
library, and they include lending terms, renewal choices, and late return charges.
Circulation staff oversees the checkout and return procedure, keeps accurate
records, and ensures that materials are available to other users. This fundamental
library service allows customers to access information, entertainment, and
educational items from the library's collection.
3. Document delivery
Document delivery is a library service that offers customers with electronic or print
copies of certain articles, chapters, or other resources, often obtained from outside
sources. Users make requests, and library staff find and retrieve the documents via
interlibrary loan networks, databases, or direct purchases. The materials are then
sent to the user electronically (by email or online platforms) or in print (by mail or in-
person pickup). This program addresses research, education, and information
requirements by filling gaps in the library's collection and providing access to difficult-
to-find or unusual books.
Problems Encountered
1. The Internet was very poor, leading to difficulty in retrieving information using
computers, laptops, and cell phones.
2. Was challenging as the was no money for transport, lunch, and accommodation.
3. When I started with my fieldwork the library had no cleaners, so we had to clean
the library ourselves.
4. Sometimes the A4 papers for printing and photocopying would run out and the
librarians would have to use their pocket money to purchase them.
Possible Solutions
3. Apply for grants: Seek funding from organizations supporting library development.
2.. Partner with local organizations: Collaborate with organizations offering cleaning
services.
Significance:
Effects on Curriculum:
1. Informed curriculum design: Fieldwork informs curriculum development and
revision.
Throughout my library fieldwork experience, I gained invaluable insights into the vital
role librarians play in facilitating information retrieval. I came to realize that librarians
are, in essence, specialists in connecting people with the information they seek,
much like doctors diagnose and treat medical conditions.
Through observation and engagement, I learned about the challenges that librarians
deal with and the techniques they use to address them. Furthermore, this experience
renewed my admiration for libraries' primary purpose: to give equitable access to
knowledge, promote lifelong learning, and stimulate community development.
6. Put a suggestion box so that library users can be able to tell what they need.
