Define the following terms

i. Alluvial soils,
ii. Exfoliation
iii. Leaching,
iv. Peat,
v. Inorganic soils
How is consistency limits useful to you as a foundation engineer
Why is the mass of soil is after sieve analysis test is not always the same with the mass of soil
before sieve analysis test
Briefly explain the two broad categories of soil
What are the characteristics of a waterlogged soil
The following are the results of a shrinkage limit test:

Initial volume of soil in a saturated state = last two positive whole number of your
student ID (cm3) i.e. 121303010 = 31, 121304017= 17
 Final volume of soil in a dry state = last two positive whole number of your student ID -
8.7 (cm3)
 Initial mass in a saturated state = 44.0 g
 Final mass in a dry state = 30.1 g
Determine the shrinkage limit of the soil.
How is soil formed?
A sieve analysis test was conducted on 650 grams of soil. The results are as follows.
Sieve no. 3/8” 4 10 20 40 100 200 pan
Opening (mm) 9.53 4.75 2 0.85 0.425 0.15 0.075
Mass retained (g) 0 53 76 73 142 85 120.5 99.8
i. Determine (a) the amount of coarse-grained and fine-grained soils
ii. Calculate the uniformity coefficient
iii. Calculate the coefficient of gradation
Define clearly and unambiguously (using EQUATIONS OR DIAGRAMS), the following terms:
i. Void Ratio, e iii. Degree of Saturation, Sr v. Dry unit weight, d
ii. Liquidity Index, IL iv. Plastic Limit, wp

A 38 mm diameter and 76 mm long cylindrical day sample has a mass of 174.2 g. After drying
in the oven at I05°C for 24 hours, the mass is reduced to 148.4 g.
Find the dry density, bulk density, and water content of the clay.
Take specific gravity of 2.7 for the soil grains and find the degree of saturation of the clay.

Prove the following relationships:

𝐺𝑠 + 𝑆𝑒 𝐺𝑠 𝛾𝑤 (1 + 𝑤)
𝛾=( ) 𝛾𝑤 =
1+𝑒 1+𝑒

Explain seepage and permeability in soil
Give three (3) reasons why the study of the flow of water through permeable soil media is
important in soil mechanics.
A constant head permeability test was carried out on a cylindrical sample of sand 10 cm diameter
and 15 cm in height. 160cm3 of water was collected in 1.75 min; under a head of 30 cm.
Compute the coefficient of permeability in m/year and the velocity of flow in m/sec.
How is Atterberg limits useful to you as a foundation engineer

Particle size analyses were carried out on two soils—Soil 1 and Soil 2— of 450 grams each.
Sieve Number Sieve Diameter (mm) Mass retained (g)
Soil 1 Soil 2
4 4.76 0 45
8 2.38 4.5 117
10 2 4.5 27
20 0.85 27 103.5
40 0.425 99 58.5
60 0.25 108 31.5
100 0.15 94.5 22.5
200 0.075 112.5 27
Pan 0 18
The results of the sieve analysis is presented below
i. Draw the grain size curves for soil 1 and soil 2
ii. Compute their values of uniformity coefficient and coefficient of gradation
Particle size analyses were carried out on two soils—Soil A and Soil B—and the particle size
distribution curves are shown in Figure

2
Particle size distributions.
The Atterberg limits for the two soils are:

(a) Classify these soils according to USCS

(b) Is either of the soils organic?
A dry sand is placed in a container having a volume of 0.0067 cm3. The dry weight of sample is
0.010g. Water is carefully added to the container so as not to disturb the condition of the sand.
When the container is filled, the combined weight of soil plus water is 0.0165g. Find the
following:
i. Void ratio of the soil in the container ii. Porosity iii. Water content iv. Specific gravity of
the soil particle v. saturated unit weight vi. Effective unit weight vii. And dry unit weight of
the soil

A plastic and liquid test was conducted to determine the plasticity of a clay soil. The mass of
water and dry soil from plastic limit test are 2.65 g and 12.35 g respectively. The table below

3
gives the test result of liquid limit tests conducted in using fall cone method. Determine the level
of plasticity of the clay soil.

Moisture content (%) 83.01 84.28 88.69 89.99 97.82 100.06 110.32
Penetration (d) 10.35 14.18 18.06 18.19 22.29 23.04 30.19
