INTRODUCTION
Small Scale Industries:Small scale industries are
business that produce goods and services on a
small scale. Industrial units with a small
investment in machinery and labour. The process
of manufacturing, production and servicing are
done on a small scale.
Cottage Industries: The backbone of the regions
rural economy and play a vital role in sustaining
traditional crafts, skills and livelihood. Home
based often traditional industries using manual
labour and locally sourced materials.

intensive, creating jobs for a large section of the rural
population, especially women, which is vital in a region

and herbs these industries can produce unique
products with high market value, promoting sustainable
development.
Rural economic upliftment: These industries are
primarily based in rural areas, contributing significantly

COTTAGE INDUSTRIES IN NORTH-EAST INDIA
North-east India was traditionally famous for cottage
industry. The region was famous for spinning and
weaving.
Sericulture:Sericulture is an old tradition of North-east
India which produces three types of silk such as pat,
Muga and endi. Pat or pure silk production is essentially
confined to Assam. Mega the golden silk is produced
mainly in Assam. Assam is the main producer of endi
some amount of it also produced by Manipur.
Weaving: Weaving is the most important cottage
industry of North-East India. In almost every household,
especially in the rural areas, there is a foot-loam or a
handloom for weaving. There are about 14,23,100
looms in North-east India majority of these are primitive
foot-loom while about 20 percent are handloom.
Bell-metal works: Bell-metal work is a traditional
cottage industry of Assam, Manipur and Tripura. The
normal products of bell-metal are the traditional plates,
cups, bowls and musical instruments.
Bamboo and cane: Important cottage industry of the
whole of household gadgets such as containers of
various shape and size, sieves, various fish catching
devices, baskets are made of bamboo and came at
home domestic use.
Goldsmith: It is a traditional craft found in North-east
India region. A goldsmith is a worker who specialize in
working with gold and other precious metals. Nowadays
they mainly specialize in jewellery making.

Handloom and Textiles: North-east handloom goods are
endowed with excellent artistry that differs from tribe
to tribe. Each state has a centuries-old handloom
heritage that teaches how to weave colorful, beautiful
and intricate handloom patterns. North-east handloom
textile is an important cultural treasure, they also play
an important role in economic growth.
Bamboo and cane products: Bamboo base crafts are
occupied important place in handicraft industry in the
north-eastern region of India. Cane and bamboo are
used to make all kinds of furniture including couches,
storage boxes, lounge chair weaving etc. Bamboo and
cane crafts are a vibrant part of many cultures and are
used for everything from building bridges and
agricultural tools to food storage and processing.
Food Processing:The food processing industry in North-
east India is growing and there are many opportunities
for entrepreneurs in the region. Food processing
includes such as pickle making, jam and jelly, tomato
paste, honey processing, fruit and vegetable canning
etc. It is important in states like Meghalaya and
Manipur.
Herbal products: Cultivating and processing medicinal
herbs to make products like herbal teas, essential oils
or skincare products, haircare products etc.
Apiculture: Keeping beehives to produce honey and
other bee products like food and beverage, cosmetics
and skincare, pharmaceuticals and natural medicine,

candle making and crafts. North-east India is known for
its high-quality honey, with unique flavors and aromas
derived from the region’s flora.
