Band Curriculum/Syllabus

Mr. Munguia – isaac.munguia@taas.tw

Standards
We follow the recommended standards by the Department of Education of the North
American Division. These standards can be found here. However, we have adapted these
standards to suit our ensemble’s needs. For Band, we combined the NAD standards with the
scope and sequence of Habits of a Successful Beginner Band Musician method book, which
you can nd here.

Philosophy and Vision

My philosophy as a music educator is that music is for everyone, and under this belief, every
student should be making music with me in the classroom. In Band, we create music by
performing a variety of styles from different composers and eras.

Weekly Grading
The band course is part of the TAAS Curriculum and is a performance-based class. Conducted
in a rehearsal style, students are expected to practice their instruments at home and put the
music together during rehearsals. I can easily recognize when a student is making progress,
i.e., practicing at home, and based on this progress, students will receive grades per
rehearsal. In FACTS, students and parents will see two weekly assignments, each with a
maximum value of four points. These are the rubrics:

4 – I practiced enough at home that I could play the required passages with no mistakes.
3 – I practiced, but it was not enough. I could’ve done better with more practice at home.
2 – I did not practice but I tried my best during rehearsal.
1 – I did not practice at all, and I was not really engaged during rehearsal.

Concert Band Instruments

We will be learning how to play instruments from scratch (5th grade) or learning new music
and techniques (6th & 7th grade), so all band members need to have an instrument. You can
rent from us, rent externally, or purchase your own instrument. Please talk to me before
purchasing, as some instruments on the market are not recommended and are more like toys.
Remember, there are no "boys’" or "girls’" instruments—everyone can play what they want!
Choose what you like and feel happy with.

These are the instruments available in the band: flute, clarinet, oboe, alto saxophone, tenor
saxophone, trumpet, horn, trombone, baritone, tuba, and percussion. Percussion instruments
require an audition, and the seats are limited to two per class. Below, you’ll nd our rental
fees if you choose to rent an instrument from us.
Weekly Rehearsals and Regular Practice
Students must bring their instruments twice a week for rehearsals. If a student leaves their
instrument at home, they will be marked as absent but are still required to sit in the classroom
and observe the rehearsal. Students are expected to practice 20-30 minutes every day. If you
live in a building, be aware of the community rules, but generally, you are allowed to practice
a musical instrument before 9 PM.

We will have two rehearsals a week, of 50 minutes each session. This is our schedule:
 Band 5, Mondays and Wednesdays, from 10:50-11:40
 Band 6, Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 10:50-11:40
 Band 7, Tuesdays and Thursdays, from 12:30-1:20

Method Books and Materials (5th graders only)

We will be using the Habits of a Successful Beginner Band Musician method book. The cost of
the book is USD 11.95 for woodwinds and brass instruments, and USD 18.95 for percussion.
Purchasing a hard copy will also grant you access to a digital version. All additional materials
such as worksheets, chorales, theory booklets, and quizzes will be provided by Mr. Munguia.
Students must bring their binders and method books to each rehearsal.

Ensemble Awards
At the end of the school year I will give two awards per class:
1. Progress Maker – Awarded to students who made outstanding progress and showed
a consistent pattern of individual practice.
2. Rhythm Genius – Awarded to percussion students who exceeded expectations and
were always ready to handle the many instruments and changes in the percussion
section.

Classroom Rules
My classroom management policy is very simple. I tell my students that music is magic
because it’s a phenomenon that is hard to explain. This magic only happens when we work
together towards the same goal. Few things in school teach students the incredible value of
teamwork and common effort. Derived from the word MAGIC, these are the ve basic
principles of my classroom management policy:

M – MAKE choices that help you and others learn.

A – Be ACCOUNTABLE for your choices.
G – GIVE every task your best effort.
I – INCLUDE everyone and always.
C – COMMUNICATE wisely.

Final Concert
Participation in the Christmas Concert and Spring Show is mandatory. Attendance will be
recorded, and students will receive 20% of their nal grade based on their participation.
